With this meal plan and great, super-nutritious recipes, you will not be hungry. The only problem with this diet is the expense. Carbs, it turns out, are fairly cheap (pasta, potatoes, bread), while vegetables, meat and cheese can be expensive. Every time you turn around, you will be off to the vegetable stand, but it is well worth it. On this diet, you will be well fed and your family, friends, doctor and insurance company will be impressed.

This diet is full of common sense and I have lost weight by following the guidelines. It is easy to follow with lots of veggies, sensible proteins and cutting out processed foods, white flour and sugar. There are some errors in the book though. In the first two week phase, you are supposed to avoid carrots (higher sugar content) yet in the first phase recipe section, the recipe includes carrots.A minor detail to be sure, but still, this is not the only example I've noticed and I am wondering who proofed/approved this and what other errors there may be. (Hey, if you are following something to the letter and the letters are wrong....not good)This is easier to follow than Atkins and allows "good" carbs and fats. This is not so much a "diet" as a way to eat well , enjoy your food and make good choices for life.I am learning to "eat to live" instead of "living to eat" and this is a help.

I did this diet in high school and the beginning of college where I lost over 60 pounds. I never gained it back! I've been stagnant for the past few years and want to lose a few extra pounds, so I'm going back!

After I purchased the South Beach Diet book I lost 25 pounds in 45 days. It surprised me too. My doc asked me if I was starving myself. I told him and another doc that i was just following the book's advice. Mostly eggs and meat to start. Got to get that protein. I also drank Ensure high protein drinks. The book came after two doctors recommended it. I'm way thru the first phase and now I can eat other foods and still eat out. I mostly have given up the bread and baked potatoes. This diet is working for me . Unbelievable.

If you're not careful, you might mistake this for a regular cookbook rather than a diet one. My wife, who is not on a diet, has been enjoying these recipes as well. There's a wonderful variety in here. The recipes are simple and easy to fix. I like how each recipe is clearly marked to indicate the corresponding phase. Some miss the mark, but the majority are right on target. There's a heavy emphasis on flavor.

This is a life changing book have lost 5 lbs in a week not even following the diet just cutting out the foods that he says we need eliminate in the1st Phase like White Bread & Rice, Honey, Sugar ect and eating the good vegetables and lean meat with a little fruit. I will be starting phase 1 assoon as I eat most of the few things I chose not to throw out such as fruit ect that will spoil. I have lost the weight around my waste asstated in the book. I am ready to loose weight and get healthy. I think this is a lifestyle of eating rather than a diet or a change of dietreally. The hardcover arrived today. I can see phase 1 as being a little restrictive but it only lastsTwo Weeks.

This is a very good diet if you have a lot of motivation. I have been fortunate that several people in my family and friend are also on this diet. My husband has already lost 25lbs in a month and I have lost 11lbs.The food is easy to eat maybe a little expensive and hard to find at times but good. I still have more to lose so I plan to stay on the diet for a while. Then there is a final phase to teach you how to eat the rest of your life.

I love this plan! It is more a lifestyle than a diet: it gives tips to change your eating habits for the rest of your life, without feeling hungry that was my big complain with other diets. It is well balanced and I got rid of high cholesterol after 2 months on this diet/exercise plan. I do not longer take cholesterol prescription since more than 3.5 years ago. I bought this book again because I gave my 2 ones as gift to other friends.

As both an accomplished historian and an accomplished fund manager, Daniel Peris brings unique insight and perspective to the fundamental question of how we should invest, individually and on a macro-level. As an historian, Peris asks and tracks how we got to where we are today, and argues that the modern portfolio theory of investment was a creature of academia, rather than the real world of business, and, to the extent that it had fit and utility at any point, modern portfolio theory is of limited or even negative value today. After the historical analysis, Peris puts on his fund manager hat and argues that, in lieu of modern portfolio theory, and its focus on share price, investors should instead act as any business owner would and focus on the cash stream (dividends) that a capital investment is likely to produce. Peris writes with humor, humility, and clarity. "Getting Back to Business" would be valuable solely as a work of history, or solely as a work of investment advice, but, here, the reader gets both.

Modern portfolio theory asserts that one can reduce risk without reducing return at least to a point, by diversifying.Another commonly employed strategy today is index investing, whereby the investor saves money on management fees, by buying a low expense index fund which have better returns than most managed funds (managed funds have to pay the managers, and any excess returns of individual stocks are unpredictable and arbitraged away by the active managers who buy and sell them according to their analysis, thus creating an efficient price for the 'index fund' investors who are sort of free-loading).Another approach is the value proposition which can be measured in a number of ways, however this author favors 'free cash flow.' "Free cash flow may be different from net income, as free cash flow takes into account the purchase of capital goods and changes in working capital." (Wikipedia)The author states (page 281), "ask yourself how much of portfolio is given over to guesswork..and how much of it is run like a business," ie. the true value of the business or enterprise. "The pendulum has swung too far to the former."I would make a couple of observations.1. The methods proposed by this book, seem compelling however the future is unknowable so free cash flow in the future can be difficult to predict.2. You have to pay the portfolio managers and this adds cost to your investments.3. His approach may work better now than in the past, because so many people are diversifying for diversifying's sake, which allows for the author's opportunity to weed out those stocks that are overvalued, just because they are purchased as part of an index. Indexing is basically a free ride on the efficiency of the market, which loses its efficiencies if too many people index as the prices of stocks are set by a more informed group of buyers and sellers like the author. Once too many people are free riding, there is not enough price finding experts to establish the efficient price, and stock pickers like the author can take advantage of these anomalies. We may be in such a period now, and perhaps have been for a while. My opinion also is that the author's approach works better in a bear down market, e.g. dot-com bust in 2000 was much worse for stocks with no real cash flow than it was for value stocks. In strong bull markets, in which fads, themes, and narratives can take hold, his approach may not work as well. Also times of marked inflation, e.g. 1970s, non-cash flow commodity and precious metals did very well which is an exception to his approach. I would admit that stock selections with good cash flow, probably did less-worse than 'nifty fifty' fad stocks, during that period of time, e.g. 1973-1974 bear market.4. Another point to be made, is that stocks can get over-valued and undervalued and some of the big gains in the market and it can be difficult to make much money in the market if one always sells at fair value, which is why some analysts always seem cautious way too soon, or almost all the time, e.g. Robert Shiller. Due to the unpredictable nature of markets and events, asset allocation and re-balancing. The author suggests doing this using different types of 'income streams' (page 274), rather than asset classes. This idea is of interest, and is consistent with the author's emphasis on 'free cash flow,' as the most important fundamental aspect of his approach. What concerns me about the author's mindset, is that there are macro forces at work, e.g. the meltdown in 2008, inflation of the 1970s, perhaps if we get into more trade disputes, that can make cash flow analysis a 'rear view mirror' exercise, and perhaps my fear is that diversifying among different themes depending on macro economic or world events might be important also. This book is an advanced, sort of text book like read and not for the novice investor, but would be good for a course in graduate school. A financial advisor, e.g. a CFA may also find this book to be a good one to have and read.I am giving the book five stars because it is so well written, researched, footnoted on a very complex subject.

Getting Back to Business is an argument against Modern Portfolio Theory and a drive to go back to looking at owning businesses with solid fundamentals and distinct profitability. It is a very academic argument against all sides of MPT and definitely not for the casual reader. However, if you are into economics or finance then there is quite a bit here worth considering. The idea of ETF’s becoming not diversified and simply a giant index of the market is well articulated. There were several points in this book I found myself nodding my head into agreement to especially as many people of my generation have invested and invested yet our returns have been nowhere near those magical numbers that are going to carry us into retirement. If you are someone who appreciates the history of business there is also a lot of value here as the author spends a good deal of time going back over the history of investing, cash flow, dividends, the rise of P/E ratios and the EFT as well as other salient corporate investment points. Finally, the other point I whole heartedly agree with and one of the reasons I left wall street behind was the focus on quarterly earnings over the long-term health of the company leads the company to make short sighted decisions that ultimately impact its future potential. This outdated mode of thinking is doing immense harm to the American economy and is quantified well here. Overall a very interesting read and I think if the modern finance industry was not so entrenched in what it was doing this offers a unique way forward. It serves as a good reminder of why I left the wall street world behind.

Let his book be your partner for a lifetime of learning."-Bill Nye, science educator and CEO, The Planetary Society"Whether it's been decades since you last took algebra or you're currently dealing with the aches of solving for x, The Magic of Math is a good read. Even though it includes, gasp, equations."-Steve Mirsky, Scientific American"As soon as the reader has absorbed one 'trick', Benjamin is already moving on to the next one - and each is more dazzling than the last."-Physics World"Arthur Benjamin's The Magic of Math is a thoroughly engaging book for readers of many ages and mathematical backgrounds.... This is an absolute gem of a book. It contains something of interest for everyone, and the author's lively style and obvious affection for the subject makes this a book to keep, reread, and share." -Mathematical Reviews"[A] fascinating book.... The writing style is inviting, and the book is filled with fun examples. Readers can easily jump around and choose from the wide variety of topics or read straight through." -Mathematics Teacher"The book is a fast-paced tour of 12 broad topics ranging from simple arithmetic to the subtleties of infinite sums.... Benjamin approaches all of these subjects with the goal of emphasizing the wonder and magic inherent in them, while still giving the reader a sense of the mathematics hiding of the magicians sleeve.... The book offers a dizzying array of mathematical delights. But here, once the mathemagician has finished his sleight-of-hand, we have the luxury of peeking behind the curtain to understand how all those tricks are done." -Math Horizons"This excellent book is filled with mathematical magic.... Benjamin's writing is very readable and entertaining: his numbers dance. "-Manhattan Book Review"The book delivers on all the promise of both aspects of Benjamin's talent: teacher and performer. The Magic of Math is a fantastic book, as one would expect from Arthur Benjamin. Benjamin's enthusiasm shines throughout the book, mathematical ideas are beautifully explained, and each chapter is surprisingly hard to put down! Moreover, the book is appropriate for many different audiences, including:-- Anyone who wants a better understanding of what it means to do mathematics, or wants to see the beauty and creativity inherent in mathematics-- Middle and High School students who want to see some of the mathematics ``behind the scenes'' of what they're learning in school-- Burgeoning mathematicians who want to see mathematics beyond the scope of the grade school curriculum-- Tutors and teachers who want an easy source of fun material to engage their students-- Anyone who wants to really understand *why* the math they learned in grade school is true.People familiar with this genre of mathematics outreach books (e.g., Here's Looking at Euclid, The Joy of X, Love and Math, etc.) often find that many of the books are very similar, and that their contents tend to overlap greatly. While readers will certainly find common topics like the Pythagorean Theorem or the Fibonacci Numbers in Benjamin's book, I think they'll also encounter quite a substantial amount of new material in this book. In particular, Benjamin goes into more mathematical depth with much of the material he discusses. Further, a quick skim of the contents reveals a lot of beautiful mathematics that is not commonly in outreach books, including an especially thorough discussion of exciting topics in a field of mathematics known as combinatorics. If you're interested in understanding the kind of thinking a mathematician does, then you'll find these chapters especially novel! At the same time, Benjamin's book is very readable. He clearly motivates the mathematical ideas he shares, and then proceeds to explain them in concrete and understandable ways. Of course, as with any good book, this book will make you think! However, you'll have Arthur Benjamin supporting you along the way, and you'll find yourself learning quite a bit of mathematics with that support. Benjamin is also sure to include a few optional and sometimes particularly robust mathematical ideas, but he clearly marks these as ``asides,'' explicitly indicating to readers that grappling with these ideas is not necessary for understanding the material. Instead, these aside sections serve to make the book more interesting to people who might reread sections of the book, or who already have an especially strong background in mathematics. The Bottom Line: This is a great book that can (and should!) be read by people from a huge variety of backgrounds. Beautiful mathematical ideas lie waiting to be discovered, and readers will encounter both engaging prose and crystal-clear mathematical exposition.Disclaimer: I was given a free copy of this book by the author, though there was neither an expectation nor a suggestion that I write a review

My third grade granddaughter got a D in math! When I squared 81 in my head she was disbelieving until we did it longhand. Her eyes widened and ensued an excited review of all she had learned in school and was so excited to share. The book paid for itself several times over from the first few pages.

I only wish Arthur Benjamin were around when I was struggling with math in high school and college. Arthur Benjamin's books have changed my life and my perception of myself as a word person, never a numbers person. Now I am both. The section on magic squares is worth the price of the whole book, and there is so much more.

"Here are some fun facts about ellipses," writes Arthur Benjamin.By now, you should know if you're likely to like this book or hate it. Benjamin clearly loves numbers, math, and anything related. Most of his chapters explore one narrow topic -- Pascal's triangle, the golden ratio, or the Fibonacci series, for example -- beginning with the oft-repeated basics, but quickly moving into detail and surprises. Of ellipses: If you have a pool table shaped like an ellipse and you put a ball at one foci, you can hit it in any direction and after it bounces off the wall, it will pass through the other foci. Occasionally he gets into a level of detail that I didn't find especially interesting, but others may. Overall, I enjoyed the book very much.

I'm 77 yrs old and have a lot of Drs. appointments. I bought the Kindle version and this is a perfect book to skip around in and read from different chapters setting in the waiting room. That's not why i bought it - i bought because i like math but the book and Kindle work great for me.

low rating only because I thought that not understanding math (as an adult), it could be a painless way to learn to understand it. I could only understand the introductory exercise. Gave it to my son who explained to me what calculus is for. He thinks it's a good book. I'll stick to bugging him about math

I am a huge fan of Dr. Benjamin's and this book doesn't disappoint. A great companion to the Great Courses' and Dr. Benjamin's Joy of Mathematics.

This is a great book. I wish I had this book way back when I was in middle / high school. I particularly enjoyed the tips on doing mental math...Great book, I highly recommend it!
