Review

Shortlisted for the 2015 RSL Ondaatje PrizeNamed one of the Times Literary Supplement's “Books of the Year”“An intimate look at the devastations of communism in Estonia. . . . [a] sensuous, character-rich portrait of the denuded landscape, ruined economy, and erratic, alcoholic personalities she encountered as a dreamy, lonely observer and teacher. . . . [Rausing] unearths fascinating history of this remote area, annexed and depleted by Russia, then Germany, then the Soviet Union. . . . A mellifluous portrait of a country slowly and painfully pulling itself into the European world.”—Kirkus Reviews“Evocative…With a keen, level eye, Rausing reconstructs the blasted landscape of abandoned farmhouses and watchtowers, the truculent personalities of the locals, including her louche drunken landlord Toivo, and the terrible scars of history.”—Publishers Weekly“[A] warm, uplifting memoir . . . Vividly conveys the terminal decline of the collective farm . . . The psychological forlornness resulting from such decline is memorably realized . . . Subtly and convincingly Sigrid manages to convey, in Noarootsi and beyond, a sense, through all the disappointments, instabilities and poverty, of a people’s continuous journey towards a firmer, more inclusive society.”—Times Literary Supplement (UK)“An entrancing, dreamlike account of rural life in post-Soviet Estonia . . . A strange, wonderful, hallucinatory exploration . . . This is not the tale of a moneyed member of the golden elite, but rather of a thoughtful observer trying to make sense of herself and her surroundings. It is extremely affecting.”—Telegraph(UK)“Pages of dreamlike prose explore Estonia’s terrible Nazi-Soviet past, the trauma of dictatorship and how memory processes that trauma. . . . In Everything is Wonderful [Rausing] evokes the spirit of a lost Baltic community and, in so doing, has written a rather beautiful book.”—Financial Times(UK)“[An] informative and heartfelt account”—Independent(UK)“Sigrid Rausing's memoir is a charming, unsettling and unusually intimate glimpse into the life of an Estonian village in transition.”—Anne Applebaum“A deliciously enjoyable, fascinating and important book that works as scholarship, diary and chronicle—it's a historical study of place, memory and tragedy that reveals the hellish experience of Estonia under Nazis and Soviets, it's a unique anthropological examination of a peculiar now vanished civilisation, the collective farm, and it's also a delightfully quirky diary of a Swedish PhD in the early 1990s that chronicles extraordinary lives of ordinary Estonian people with a playful curiosity.”—Simon Sebag Montefiore“Sigrid Rausing’s lyrical and evocative description of a former collective farm on a remote peninsula in Estonia portrays the transition from Soviet rule to independence. She shows how the suppression of history in the Soviet Union meant that the villagers knew very little about their past, including the brief period of independence between the two world wars, and the violent Nazi and Soviet occupations that followed. This is a startling and beautiful book.”—Lady Antonia Fraser“In this disorientating memoir, Sigrid Rausing describes life as an anthropologist in post-Soviet Estonia. The narrator, her subjects, and their country are caught between worlds, unsure where they are going, why they are going there or indeed if they are going anywhere at all. It is lovely, gentle and very human.”—Oliver Bullough“Intimate, lyrical and evocative—Sigrid Rausing's memoir captures a forgotten world, on the cusp between Sovier occupation and a Western future. Her academic fieldwork among the fragments of the ethnic Swedish presence in an Estonian village has produced a finely drawn literary account of people and places, encompassing history, geography, culture and biography.”—Edward Lucas“A delicate, precise, and richly informative memoir of a forgotten Europe and a vanished world. Everything Is Wonderful shows that grey can be a very interesting color.”—Timothy Garton Ash“In 1993-94, Sigrid Rausing spent a year doing anthropological fieldwork in a former collective farm in post-Soviet Estonia. Twenty years on, that work, and the diaries she kept at the time, and later during a return visit in 2003, come together in this remarkable and instructive book, where continually interesting individual characters are given a broader historical and cultural context. Dr. Rausing combines a keen eye for the telling detail with striking—at times lyrical—descriptions of rural lives and landscapes, and in documenting the “lost futures” of those working there, reminds us again of the dreadful human cost of totalitarianism.”—Robert Conquest, author of The Great Terror and The Harvest of Sorrow“Beautiful, gentle and haunting. Every single edge in it seems to be frayed. And what a triumph it is to have allowed that frayedness to survive the whole process of writing it down. It is alive like an old frayed tapestry found in old trunk. Perhaps archaically beautiful is the phrase I am groping after. Like a sort of dance of the blind, slow and gentle, feeling its way, the shoes moving carefully over the floor.”—Adam Nicolson

Sigrid Rausing chose to spend a year on a remote collective farm in Estonia during that country's transition from Soviet rule to independence. It was a time of great uncertainty, politically, socially and economically. For Rausing, the general feeling of disorientation and confusion was compounded by linguistic barriers and the psychological difficulties in building relationships with people whose lives and livelihoods were collapsing around them. She is a sensitive, intelligent and well schooled observer, providing rich anthropological commentary interspersed with heartfelt personal observations. The result is a fascinating read about a new society struggling to emerge out of the wreck of the old. The first two thirds of the book is especially informative on Estonian history, culture and identity.

This is an odd book. I loved Estonia when I visited so I was looking to learn more about an obscure but interesting country. The author does weave in some interesting interesting history and cultural anecdotes (some quite funny). But, I got the sense that she really longed to write a classic novel but then would occasionally remember that the work was supposed to be essentially documentary in nature. She's a talented writer gifted at capturing the rhythm and feel of the place but, ultimately, I struggled to stay engaged as the story shifted randomly from wistful daydreaming to chronicling and back with little notice.

Somewhere, painfully there is a story here, half told, mostly silent book about not sure what. No clear description, you must search and search for meaning, Swedes are so to the point of honesty as to be rude but in the writing, you wander around lost and hopeless, maybe the book has no point, hurt to read, I hoped for more, but got a limp handshake.

I read everything I can get my hands on about Estonia, and I learn something with each read. Unfortunately, I learned little from this book. I think there's a little too much personal interaction that is only interesting to the writer, and not the reader.

The book was very helpful explaining all of the ethnic and political influences in Estonia. I spent a few days in the West then Tallinn then Narva. This helps explain the differences.

certainly one of the best books written that shows a different culture and harsh life conditions in a remote part of the world...

Good for anyone wanting to understand the history of Estonia and how that is shaping the liberated Estonia since 1991.

Very interesting book dealing with an area that's been an interest of mine since college. Well written.

Precious Objects is written by Alicia Oltuski, a young woman whose father and grandfather both dealt in the diamond business, mostly in New York City. I thought this was a wonderful book, very well researched that's for sure. The author goes into all aspects of diamonds, how they are made, how they are obtained, and also explains their history starting in Africa. She explains how the famous De Beers diamond company started and lots of the politics that go with such a large company. There is quite a bit of information to read through in this book, so I skipped around a bit. I really liked parts of the book when the author brought her own family history into the book, both past and present. I am giving the book four stars only because I wished a family or two from Holland or Belgium where they also deal with the diamond trade was represented. It was easier for me to deal with explanations pertaining to diamonds on a family basis. Overall, a great book and a great read. If reading Precious Objects doesn't make you feel like buying diamonds (my birthstone) nothing will. Now I also know where their great advertising on television comes from. Say it with diamonds.

Alicia Oltuski grew up in one of the diamond dealer families in the Diamond District in NYC. In her delightful book, she tells a bit about the history of diamonds, how diamonds are cut, how the price is determined, etc. She explains the issue of the "blood diamonds", or "conflict diamonds". She also goes into how diamonds are being "grown" in laboratories. Something that really surprised me was the trend now for diamonds "made from your loved one". Using some of the carbon from the deceased a diamond can be ordered and produced so your loved one will always be close to you. Hmmm. It is a fascinating view into the secret world of the Diamond District.

i stumbled upon this book years ago and recently was able to remember the title in order to buy a copy for myself. This is written by a journalist daughter of a diamond district merchant in NYC who goes into details of how diamonds indeed became girls' best friend. Very informative and well written.

Interestingly, this is finally a book I think my husband would also enjoy -- don't know if he will read it on my Kindle, tho! Sort of sorry I didn't buy it in hard copy -- a very interesting story. I kept looking at my engagement diamond all through it, wondering about my own diamond's history.

It was a very interesting book. I listened to the author speak yesterday and she writes just like she talks. She lived with her parents in New York and has an intimate knowledge of the Diamond industry on 47th street. She is well educated and the senior residents where I work loved the hour she spent with us.

My favorite non-fiction books teach me something new on every page while telling a story in an engaging and enjoyable way; Ms. Oltuski's portrait of the jewelry industry easily passes this test. I knew next to nothing about the jewelry industry before, and now that I've finished the book I feel like an insider.Ms. Oltuski found fascinating characters through which to tell her story: a pair of crime-fighting brothers who work to prevent and solve robberies to karmically avenge their own family's jewelry business; the real DeBeers family, who walked away from a fortune because it was ruining their nice farm; a mogul who made his money creating a product that the diamond industry simultaneously hated and found themselves needing to use; and a group of Ms. Oltuski's own family members, both lucky and tragic. Before I read this book I didn't think I had any interest in how jewelry was found, made, and sold. To me, jewelry was an overpriced rip-off, and it was enough to know I just shouldn't spend a lot of money on it. Now, I still think jewelry's a rip-off, but I'm glad it exists: The fact that these products have very little practical use or intrinsic value has created a unique world of fascinating characters and unique behaviors that just aren't necessary in normal markets. It makes me want to go to 47th Street and haggle.

This was a very interesting and informative book. Having the author's personal story made for a very compelling narrative! I learned a lot about these sparkly gems. I highly recommend this book!

I loved this book so much I bought and sent copies to all of my relatives. I personallhy was involved in the same business in NYC and can definately picture all that Oltuski describes.....and with accuracy! I enjoyed the style and progression of the story (ies) and didn't want it to end. I look forward to more lyrical stories for this author!

From Library Journal

Grade 4 Up-A collection of poems by Native Americans in grades 2-12. Most of these selections were written in response to images of Native artifacts or historical photographs. The young writers' personal reactions and associations to these images leave readers with a strong sense of each one's experience as a modern Indian, and of the values that each holds dear. The book is a work of art in itself, with dozens of full-color and black-and-white photos from the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. The pages are also decorated with detailed border designs. Eight nations are represented, with brief descriptions of the character of each people. While the poems are suitable for younger children to hear aloud, the book is small and would not work with a large group. There are no other collections like this.Cris Riedel, Ellis B. When the Rain Sings: Poems by Young Native Americans is a compilation of breathtaking pieces published by the National Museum of the American Indian Smithsonian Institution which spotlights the work and poetry of eight different Nations consisting of the Ojibwe, Lakota, Omaha, Navajo, Cochiti-Kiowa, Tohono O'odham, Hopi and Utes. These poems exist to reflect the people's way of life and their connection to communities, life, land and memory while telling the story of these tribes through the eyes of their youth. Accompanying these pieces are photographs, as well as traditional artwork, and a display of rhetorical sovereignty presented by the many insightful and promising youth which are representing their peoples.

When the Rain Sings is a wonderful anthology of poems by Young Native American writers. The youth seem to capture what adults often seem to leave out. I definitely recommend this book to all those who love poetry. The work truly is universal.
