How many times have you heard a lot of hype about a product, finally buy it, and then am disappointed? Well, I can honestly say that such is NOT the case here. I've been hearing for years and years how awesome the Sandman series was, how if you didn't read it, you were horribly depriving yourself. How this was some of the best *fiction* much less fantasy fiction ever written in any form. How this was a graphical novel series for grown-ups, how it's adult fiction in the best sense of the word. So I finally broke down and started the series. Vol. 1 and 2 were really good, and then I bought Vol. 3 here. Holy cow. "The Dream of a Thousand Cats" ALONE was well worth the price of admission. "Mid-Summer Night's Dream" was award-winning, and worth every accolade Gaiman got.I know you hear lots of hype but in this case it's worth it.There's only one other series out there that can compare to this: Starman by James Robison. If you loved that series, with its well-thought-out characters, extremely intricate plots, foreshadowing and "Easter Eggs" which take years to work out, and storylines which bring you to tears and laughter, then this series is for you.

First up, all of the 10 volumes of The Sandman novels deserve 5 stars. They are a phenomenal acheivement in not only graphic novels but in storytelling itself. The story is complex and cerebral and the characters so well developed that Sandman is one of my favorite stories period. The novels are intensely violent and often disturbing but everything that happens serves a purpose, and nothing happens by chance or just for the sake of things happening. Something that happens in one volume may become vitally important 3 or 4 volumes later. By the end of the 10th volume everything has come full circle with an appropriate and satisfying end. With regards to Volume 3 itself it is exceptionally good, with some clever takes on historical events. This volume consists of 4 different, unrelated short stories. While Morpheus plays a role in 3 of the 4 he is more of a minor character than the primary focus. The first story focuses on Calliope, a former lover of Morpheus, who has been imprisoned by a writer to be used for inspiration. The second story concerns a cat whose kittens were killed by humans. She seeks out Morpheus who shows her an alternate reality where cats are the dominant lifeform. The third story concerns Morpheus' involvement in Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream. This story won a World Fantasy Award, the first comic to do so. The final story is about a minor DC superhero, Element Girl, who is retired and ashamed of her appearance. She wants to die but cannot because she is invulnerable. She meets Death and asks her to speak to the sun god Ra and allow her to die.As far as the volume's content on the Kindle Fire - I was hesitant to abandon the volumes in print worried that the Kindle Fire might provide a more difficult viewing experience. That hasn't turned out the be the case. The novel is easy to read, you can scan in to specific boxes, and the colors are vibrant.

I only really dug two of the four stories in here, which are standalone single issues that aren’t forwarding a larger storyline. And those two are the ones in the middle, about cats and Shakespeare. Gaiman is a wise man in the fields of authority and creativity, and these middle two each really offered a pretty full worldview on their own. The other two strive for emotions they really don’t connect to by the end. Also included is Gaiman’s script for the first story as a curioso. Overall, a stepping stone and pause before hopefully getting into some meatier stuff.

A collection of one shot stories between the Doll's House, and Season of the Mists story arch, you can really get a sense of Gaiman playing with his now iconic character here. From the dream of a heartbroken cat, to the very first production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, the tales weave through time and space as we get to see new sides and aspects of the Lord of Dreams, discovering new facets of him as the author himself discovered them. While there is very little to be lost plot wise by skipping this volume, there is everything to be gained in reading it.

Excellent Story. Highly recommended for a reason. As a comic book fan I know most people probably imagine the world of comics as being about super heroes or Sunday Funnies. But, the comic medium is worthy of so much more.Sandman is that "much more". The story is excellent, and is wonderfully executed. You're going to want to get all of these at once, because they can't be put down.If you're already a comic book fan, you've likely heard of Sandman. So what are you waiting for? Read this already! If you aren't already a comic book fan, maybe it's time to give it a chance. If any story is going to change your mind about the possibilities of this art form, this is the one.

I loved these stories in the trade paperback form, and I really looked forward to them on the Kindle Fire. The new Kindle Fire Comics with the pop-out panels are a surprisingly nice way to read comics; and I thought Watchmen in this format was a masterpiece. But I also knew Watchmen had a significant advantage in this regard: the entire series was drawn with an extremely regular panel grid, with only rare deviations. So pop-up rectangular panels suited it well. I expected the format to be more challenging for something with more panel variety -- especially something as downright experimental as Sandman. So I expected some of the pop-out choices to be difficult. I was ready to tolerate some unusual choices. And they handled it well, better than they did in Volumes 1 and 2. They did a nice job with challenging panels like wide or tall panels with dialog balloons in many places. They did an OK job with some of the rotated panels. In Volumes 1 and 2, in some places they got the dialog order wrong, so a response pops out before the statement that prompted it; and in a few cases, they missed a dialog balloon entirely; and the only way I could read it was to switch to page mode. This volume had neither of those problems, so I'm giving it 5 stars.

#1,240,030 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I found Steven Gaines' book The Sky's the Limit: Passion and Property in Manhattan quite interesting overall. I read it from the perspective of someone wanting to learn some context behind the convoluted world of Manhattan real estate. In this regard some parts of the book are not that useful: principally those that in a gossipy sense focus on celebrities buying seven and eight figure properties and all the machinations to get past apartment co-op boards. On the other hand there is some genuinely useful factual information. It provides the history of a number of the structures in Manhattan, in particular the cooperative structure, which ironically started out as a socialist inspired movement for tenants who own their building but in modern times this turned into the ultimate exclusive club for the very rich. (There are some great quotes in the book about such excesses such as Bill Clinton's remarking on the fantasy Upper East Side co-op, that it makes the White House almost look like public housing.) The book also gives a lot of background on some of the prominent buildings in Manhattan such as the Time Warner Center, the Ansonia Hotel and the Dakota. Finally it gives some perspective on the different neighborhoods, contrasting the large parcels available on Central Park West with the smaller and older developed real estate on the Upper East Side. Overall, a good read with a bit of useful facts to impart.

While a few of the stories are somewhat interesting, for the most part the book is tedious, lacks focus, nor does the writer seem to know exactly what he is saying. The whole thing feels like an overly-long term paper that is packed with filler and low on substance. Little attention is paid to the real-life characters herein, which are (in some cases) interesting and could have been given more room for their stories to breathe in relation to the real estate focal point. But people are dropped in favor of reciting statistics that do not serve the material. Again: it reads like a term paper that is too short and suffered from last minute bloating to meet a required page count. Don't get me wrong: such numbers and statistics are helpful when they help flesh out the world or create a measure of understanding when they serve the point of the story. But this has no real thread combining all of the anecdotes other than "hey! look! expense real estate in Manhattan! WOW!". This COULD have been interesting material with a unique way into viewing this swath of Manhattan's social elite. But the book doesn't seem to know what the focus is, nor what it is saying in the first place. The historical bits, especially towards the beginning are the most interesting and give you insight into how Manhattan came to be built into the city it is today. But the author drops that quickly and moves on to something else, as if the goal was to talk about EVERYTHING rather than something. Once again: bad term paper with no focus or point of view. As a result, you stop caring about the people and the place and that is death in a book - be it fiction or non-fiction.

The Sky's the Limit gives a window (pun intended) on the life of Manhattan real estate. Gives an idea of who the major players are, who they have been in the past, how they operate, and where they are today, with one no longer alive. Also gives some decent historical facts of the construction and history of the buildings, the language New Yorker's use which is different from other parts of the country. A duplex in NYC is not the same as a duplex in California and ties in celebrity without celebrity being the focus, just a natural part of the landscape. It also makes clear that celebrity in NYC isn't exactly a desirable quality in a neighbor, also very different from California.I would recommend the Sky's the Limit to anyone interested in Manhattan real estate, who wants to know more about the important buildings, who lives in them, what their cultures and histories are. It delivers superbly in this area, what it sets out to do. I really felt like I was there and I also feel like I know a little about the landscape. Good book.

I bought this book for some background on my first visit to New Orleans expecting to get some perspective on the city. I got that and then some. The writing is clear and passionate. The information is incredibly well researched with many references and excerpts. Some of the info was eye opening and surprising (Lincoln wanted to deport all the freed slaves?!). This book illuminates not only the history of a fascinating, beautiful, and unique city, but it also offers a solid footing for understanding a large portion of American history. I want to pass this book on to friends, but I am not ready to give it up yet.

Lots of good information about the cultural history of New Orleans, with interesting observations about the effects of different imperial powers (French, Spanish, U.S.) on the region, the complexity of race relations against the background of the slave trade, and the strong Caribbean influence from Cuba and Haiti. It's pretty well written and entertaining, but I had two problems with it: first, the author goes out on lots of limbs to speculate about possible cultural origins of New Orleans music--a lot of "it's possible that" and "it's not unreasonable to assume", when an actual musicologist would be reluctant to make such connections. Second, the book lacks some cohesion, often relaying piles of information without tying it all together, particularly at the end when it comes to a crashing stop and shifts gears to suddenly talk about Mardi Gras Indians in the aftermath of Katrina.

Minutely researched and documented, fascinating in bringing historical context to bear, well-written, and enlightening on so many topics. A must-read for those who have any love for New Orleans and her traditions in their hearts. I found myself highlighting passage after passage to revisit later. If you want to understand the "how" and the "why" and the "what" and the "who" of New Orleans, I can think of nothing more effective than reading this book. The timeline covered ranges from pre-Columbian to post-Katrina and encompasses the entire Western world as needed to tell the story of this special, spiritual place.

I have read dozens of books on New Orleans history and this is one of the best. Sublette's deep research into the "World that made..." really illuminates how NO became what it is today, the mix of cultures, music, food, architectures etc., Full of fascinating facts and stories, threaded with a informed analysis. His erudition and fine writing make this a pleasure to read Read it and pass on to others who are curious about the by the history of one of America's greatest cities and cultural treasures..

Let me say that I'm usually a strictly fiction reader, so maybe that has something to do with my feelings about this book. Mr. Sublette has obviously done his research here, and it is nicely written so that even I am staying with it and sort of enjoying it. The thing here is, to me, it is almost OVER researched. It's as if Mr. Sublette is so very excited about his subject that he just can not pack enough details and quotes into his book. It's almost like a very, very well researched and foot noted college paper by an extremely enthusiastic student. It's readable, for sure. It is absolutely educational (and then some!) but personally, I feel as if it could have benefited from some editing, some self restraint and maybe a more specific time line. We are kind of bouncing from the 1500's to the 1700's to Katrina, and I'm only on page 87 ! This book may have been more educational than I'd bargained for, but I'm enjoying it and learning a lot. I hope that I can hang in there and finish it!

It provided a lot of needed background information on early New Orleans that I needed. Good in combination with other histories of N.O.

For anyone interested in the musical influence behind american music way back from Africa, France or Spain, through Cuba and New Orleans... Beautifully written, wonderfully researched, with a real feeling for people and places and for music. I have only one complaint: Amazon has got to develop a way to allow us to listen to bits of the music the author is talking about. A fabulous book.

A beautiful and wise book about the history of New Orleans, with fascinating insights into its many connections with the Caribbean and the old world and the rest of the United States, with particular insight into the musical history of our most musical city.

The Troll With No Heart in His Body: And Other Tales of Trolls from Norway

From Publishers Weekly

Norwegian-born storyteller Lunge-Larsen scoured her homeland's literary landscape for this stellar collection of nine troll tales, many of which will be unfamiliar to American children. Ugly, greedy, fierce and dimwitted, trolls provide admirable subject matter, and Lunge-Larsen spins her stories with enthusiasm. The other characters are memorable, too, from the feckless Butterball, a boy who outwits his captor (a hungry troll hag who carries her head under her arm) to the familiar trio of goats in "The Three Billy Goats Gruff." A Nordic flavor permeates the customary folktale elements present here (such as kidnapped princesses and magical quests) and each tale ends with the Norwegian refrain "Snipp, snapp, snute/ Her er eventyret ute! (Snip, snap, snout/ This tale's told out!)." Short introductions and afterwords for every entry expand on troll lore. Readers learn, for example, that trolls will burst and turn into stone when exposed to sunlight, and that Edvard Grieg's famous "In the Hall of the Mountain King" for Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt refers to the trolls of Norway's Dovre Mountains. Bowen (Antler, Bear, Canoe) fills the slightly narrow pages of this oversize volume with striking woodblock-print compositions and border motifs; according to an illustrator's note, her work draws on ancient carvings as well as early-20th-century art from Norway. Their rough-hewn, almost primitive quality belies the sophisticated use of color and line. A noteworthy addition to the folktale shelf. Ages 5-12. (Sept.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Grade 2-5-Nine Norwegian tales that feature ugly, dim-witted giants who live inside mountains or under bridges, as in "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," the best known of these tales. In fact, the majority of the stories here will be unfamiliar to American audiences. Trolls readily capture children to eat for dinner ("Butterball"), steal princesses and hold them captive to rub their aching heads ("The Boy Who Became a Lion, a Falcon, and an Ant"), and covet human possessions ("The Handshake" and "The Boy and the North Wind"). Lunge-Larsen has fashioned her retellings largely from the folktales collected by Peter Christian Asbjirnsen and Jirgen Moe in the early 1800s. She includes detailed source notes for each selection, a bibliography, and an insightful introduction that discusses her experience with trolls. The retellings retain the power of the originals and don't shy away from the violent nature of several of these stories. Each tale is accompanied by a full-page illustration, several smaller images, and decorative borders that underscore the plot. Bowen's colorful woodcuts-with their folk-art sensibilities-evoke traditional Norwegian decorative art and architecture. The interplay between the art and the text is outstanding. Because of its readability, tellability, and strong visual presentation, this collection should have wide and enduring appeal.Denise Anton Wright, Alliance Library System, Bloomington, IL Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Now that I have kids, I've found my forays back into the world of children's literature disappointing. I can only assume the publishing business has become so efficient at branding and marketing, that it seems like anything that doesn't conform to a carefully categorized set of shiny, cheerful production values is marginalized into oblivion. I keep wondering, where is the mystery that I remember from when I was a kid? Where the sense of possibility? The feeling that there was more to the world than met the eyes? So much of what's available seems so . . . obvious. This book was a wonderful discovery. It's the product of an inspired collaboration between a wonderful storyteller and an imaginative printmaker. The storyteller remembers first hand those great old tales that I dimly recall from when I was a kid, and manages to keep them true to what made them so fascinating while helping to explain them to a new generation. Great playfully handled stuff about how there are forces out there in the world that defy our sense of order and reason, but that how even something as ur-awful as a troll can easily be managed by the littlest child, if he only stops to use his brains! And stories that have been repeated too often like the Three Billy Goats Gruff come compellingly back to life. The illustrations are at least as strong as the story. They break away from the greeting card/funnypaper/cuteness school of artistic design, in favor of woodcuts that manage to be richly colored and engaging, but also to introduce a degree of subtelty and abstraction that leave room for a sense of mystery and possibility that is so lacking in so many children's books. This book gets my highest recommendation. (Certainly every child of Scandinavian heritage should have a copy in his or her library!) I only wish I could find more books like this . . .

I was so happy to find these wonderful troll stories told the way I remember them! My mother (who grew up in northern Minnesota) told us kids these stories when we were very small (that's a long time ago). Lately I thought the tradition was lost because I could only find watered-down versions of the the Three Billy Goats Gruff, not the fascinating and powerful tales I remembered. But all is not lost. Here is a collection of genuine Troll stories, with ugly, scary trolls in all shapes and sizes, and clever boys and girls who persevere through wild and strange adventures and eventually save the day. Great stories, wonderfully told. The illustrations are beautiful.I first borrowed this book from the library, but of course had to then buy a copy of my own. I highly recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this book. I bought it to read to my four-year-old and the book well exceeded my expectations. Here you will find classics such as the Three Billy Goats Gruff and tales you may never have heard of. They are all beautifully put together and could be told as a traditional story teller might or read aloud for maximum impact.Great stories well told, and a treasure trove for children and folklorists alike.

This book is a delight and a must have if you are obsessed with trolls or have a fetish for anything Scandanavian. Very cool, very quirky.

I enjoyed he traditional stories and the kids and I had fun reading them to each other. Snip snap snout! This review's told out.

I love children's books and I love sharing them with children. I have high standards... I like good writing. I expect illustrations that truly add something to the quality of the storytelling and which are truly artistic. Usually one or the other, and often both, is lacking.Lise Lunge-Larsen brought my Scandinavian heritage forward in a respectful way when she retold these tales, and Betsy Bowen's well known woodcuts did everything art can do to encourage the telling of a tale. The art actually has a nostalgic feel that lends to how old troll tales are and seemed to have been dug out of the past with them.I had begun reading about trolls to my son with D'Aulaires' Book of Trolls (New York Review Children's Collection), and while I love the d'Aulaires artistry and it's a well written book, it was as much the history of trolls as it was stories. My son sat through it, but he didn't beg for me to read like he did with this one. Lunge-Larsen takes the opposite approach with a little bit of Troll lore followed by mostly story. Having already read d'Aulaire aloud and taking my son's age into consideration, I read the commentary to myself this time and only read him the stories. He has continued to come back to this book to hear favorite stories again (which is good -- memory has its development in the early years and hearing stories repeated is beneficial) and asked for felt board characters to go along with the books and to aid him in narrating the stories from memory both for my benefit and when he is on his own.

Lise Lunge-Larsen grew up with troll stories in Norway and has been sharing them with American children since her coming to this country. For a parent to read, or a storyteller to tell, this collection is rich and valuable. Children need stories as vehicles for understanding. They reveal universal turths. They speak to our inner circumstances, they make us human. Some of the basic lessons that are repeated and surface include: -be true to your nature -remember who you are -Life is a journey and only you can take yours -Use your gifts -Don't ever give up -Everything you need can be found inside yourself While learning these stories, children can rest in a world that is full of magic, but mirrors their own. A world that has the possibility of greatness that lies within each human heart. I bought this book to add to my collection of stories to tell again and again to children to remind them of their own capacity to overcome challenging situations in thier lives. I could not be more pleased!

Review

‘There are loads of Christmas classics out there already, but I’m buying this for its sheer gorgeousness as much as for the recipes. I only have to look at the cover and I’m breaking in to “signin’ and swingin’ and gettin’ merry like Christmas”’ Diana Henry, Sunday Telegraph‘Full of celebratory recipes, with a few healthy ones for January’ Sunday Times‘What could be more joyous than a new book from Fortnum & Mason and Tom Parker Bowles? That it's festive is an added bonus – no one does Christmas like Fortnum's, nor like Tom, as it turns out … It's packed with everything you need to know for winter feasting’ DeliciousPraise for Fortnum & Mason: The Cook Book:‘This book, with its lovely colour illustrations taken from old Fortnum’s direct marketing booklets, is undiluted nostalgic celebration’ Rose Prince‘Some of my earliest food memories are of Fortnum & Mason … So, understandably, the Fortnum’s Cook Book has a strong nostalgic appeal for me, but a cookery book cannot survive on sentimentality alone, and I have insulted the book’s elegance already, besmirching it with hideously garish post-it notes’ Nigella Lawson‘A beautiful new cookbook’ Clerkenwell Boy‘It’s a beauty!’ Gizzi Erskine

Most years I treat myself to a new Christmas or holiday cookbook and I've found some real winners over the years. This year I found two! One of my daughters lives in the UK so I am well acquainted with Fortnum & Mason's - one of the world's biggest department stores, known all over the world for their tea & provisions. Whether you're climbing Mt. Everest or taking a picnic to the park, they've got you covered. And of course their Christmas Hampers are legendary. The current Imperial fills 5 large hampers and includes both a ham and a tea set - not to mention a special party cracker that sits in the middle of your table and explodes, showering goodies all over the room. (Fortnum & Masons pioneered the party cracker. )Usually cookbooks first published in the UK appear there weeks or months before they do here, but as it happens Fortnum & Mason's Christmas and Other Winter Feasts is the rare exception, much to my daughter's chagrin. I was so excited to tell her about this book - and she was so disappointed because that was what she had intended to send me for Christmas. (Ah well, great minds think alike!)Loaded with the history of various fall and winter holidays and recipes for every event of the season, Fortnum & Mason's Christmas is a work of art, lavishly illustrated from their collection of artwork that goes back to 1910 or so. Easy to read, easy to cook from , this is a book you will treasure for years to come. Now, if you live on this side of the pond there are a few things you will want to remember: measurements are in metrics, so you will want a cooking scale. (One can be had for <$20.} Strong flour is bread flour, plain flour is all purpose and caster sugar is the same as bartenders sugar, though I've noticed of late that Domino's is as fine as caster sugar. UK medium eggs are US large and 180C is 350F.As it happens, this is not the first Fortnum & Mason's Cookbook I happen to own. Some years ago my granddaughter gave me a small volume entitled Tea at Fortnum & Mason's, chockfull of recipes for many of the items they serve at their famous Afternoon Tea. I have cooked that little book nearly to shreds, so I've no qualms about recommending this volume to you "uncooked."One special note: While you'll find plenty of recipes to make your winter holidays special, this is the season when fresh game is available almost everywhere in the UK. If you're lucky enough to have a hunter in the family or feel like splurging a bit you'll find a fair few wonderfully classic recipes for venison, partridge, quail, pheasant and rabbit. Enjoy!Highly Recommended! Merry Christmas!

Recipes and lots more, a great Christmas stocking stuffer if you have a really large stocking. I love this book for year around recipes.

Love everything about this book. Things are British classics and festive
