Congressman Chris Stewart has written many non-fiction works depicting our nation's history and patriotic progression. This fiction work takes his perspective from a religious, military, and patriot, to an entirely new end. While written with an LDS understanding of pre-mortal and mortal existence, "Lt Col" Stewart follows the close-knit relations of family and friends as they progress from the one realm into another. However, as the storyline moves into modern-day, the author weaves an entirely all too believable terrorist scenario, based on actual Senate testimony of vulnerabilities in our nation's (and world's) fragile infrastructure, and the chaos that could ensue if a terrorist chose to attack that weakness.Having had assignments in Iraq where I wrote that nation's electrical infrastructure security plan, and later at the Pentagon where I led the Joint Staff, Strategic Plans & Policy's Homeland Division, this work struck a very familiar chord. While terrifying in the nature of the real threat posed in the storyline, I also found myself drawn-in by the characters Stewart brought to life. I have enjoyed the series tremendously.
Books 1 to 4 are awesome...5 starts to wane a bit, and 6 is disappointing. I think Mr. Stewart was hoping for a 9 book series around book 4...but then got elected to Congress and had to wrap it up. That is how it felt to me. But otherwise, great characters, story...well worth the money and time investment to read. You really do get connected to the characters...that is why book 6 feels a little hollow.
The complete series took a long time to read but there were many jewels all through the book; it probably took less time than reading each separate book.It shows the importance of listening for God's directions and how important service and helping others are. It was well balanced between the darkness of Satan and the light of God.One of the problems we have is trying to visualize what heaven in like. I thought Chris Stewart did a credible job of the fallen angels. I definitely felt the presence of God throughout. While he describes evil whispering in our ears constantly to make us fall, it truly brought home how often we are tempted and don't listen to God and not do what we know is right.A negative, if you will call it one, was that I would have preferred other faiths be portrayed as strong as the Mormons. I am not familiar with the Mormon Saints or prophets but all religions have their own known saints and prophets so that didn't really distract.I am truly impressed with the Mormon's strong belief in families and the way they help each other. Many other faiths do the same but it seems like the Mormon faith is much better at this than any of the others.I do not normally write reviews because my thoughts are probably more superficial than most reviewers but I found myself wanting more especially with world events as they are. It was positive and rewarding.
The first part of the series was a little hokey but as I got more and more into the story, it became more interesting. Great plot and I enjoyed the author's writing style. He does a little too much description of the surroundings, weather, etc. so I skim read those parts which didn't enhance the plot but I still found the book to be very enjoyable. I will definitely recommend it to my church friends!
Fantastic series! I had a difficult time getting interested in the first book, and actually started and stopped it three times. On the fourth try (about a year later) I pushed through as good friends had raved about the series, which was what initially prompted me to purchase the entire set. The story is so relevant as to what is happening in our world today. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and highly recommend the series.
Although a work of fiction, it contains many themes that are true and eternal especially in the day and age of this world. It is interesting to read about this author's perspective on the Last Days and getting a sense of some of the hardships that are to come, but all the while knowing that events could turn out very differently. Nevertheless, the concept of spiritual preparedness is evident as the true King of this world, even the Lord Jesus Christ, will return and will reign while Satan, the devil, will be bound, but coming after a battle of principalities, powers, and all manner of sins and evilness, a battle that if we are not prepared, we shall perish and fear, for great and terrible will be that day when Christ comes again.
This is an amazing story. It really lags the first couple of books/chapters but then becomes a real page turner. It is easy to believe this could happen in today's world. Even if you do not believe in a pre and post world, or the 'curtain', it is a comforting book, in that respect. I think it may explain some inner feelings that many folks have and find hard to verbalize. Anyway, it is a great story and I have re-read this book over the years, several times. I purchased this one to give as a gift. I think about the only place you can find the entire book, as one, is on an eBook.
This is absolutely one of the finest books I have ever read. I am amazed at the detail that Mr. Stewart presents in his writing. He writes as an authority in every phase in each of the books. I am reminded of the phrase "describe what you don't see." I have been reading the books aloud to my wife. Doing so helps me so much more to sense and feel where the author is going.Mr. Stewart captures so much of the teachings of the LDS (Mormon) church. I would especially recommend the books to the members of the church.
