I believe I put this book on my wish list to support ECW Press. Then I accidentally bought it. I am so glad I did though. It is a well written well paced book. The novel has many mysteries to solve and while it does in an engaging way, it also does it in a realistic way. Ms. Higdon actually reveals a mystery without fake suspense and build ( answers come in the story when they should). As a reader, I acknowledged it, was surprised the answer came and then saw more book to read.Ms. Higdon tells this story that lasts for 40 years without a lot of exposition. The action are immediate and the characters are engaging. The secondary characters are not necessarily well explained, but I could tell that they were fleshed out and the author showed only what she had to show.I definitely rooted for these characters they will live on in my mind. Even at the end of the book, the author is revealing the actions and motivations of the characters that I didn’t even consider.

This novelist writes in a way that makes me feel like she's thinking out loud to herself but in a way that my mind already does in its private moments. Her story reels out like a skein of tangled yarn at first, but she sorts and weaves it back together in the end. It's one of those books that makes its way into one's bloodstream and bones. I want more from this one.

This story is wonderful. The colorful characters blend so well together, all within a very well written story. So very enjoyable! Read it !!!

Beautifully written, often funny, frequently sad but uplifting.

Just as described

I am bereft! Closing the final pages of Christine Higdon’s beautiful novel, “The Very Marrow of Our Bones”, feels like saying goodbye to life-long friends. I shall miss Lulu Parsons and Doris Tenpenny, and all the characters I fell deeply in love with in this literary masterpiece. Of course, I’ll re-read this novel in my life, but there is nothing like the first time; books like this don’t come around often enough. (This will be on my Top Ten List for 2018 for sure.)So, it’s right there in the title: if your mother up and abandons you, you will be affected for life – to the very marrow of your bones. Higdon’s gorgeously written and plotted story of the Parson family swept me away and I hated to “come back to Earth” when it was over.Things happen in families that can never un-happen nor be forgotten. But can they be forgiven?Set in a small town near Vancouver, BC, the story is told alternating points of view between Lulu Parson and Doris Tenpenny.Lulu was 10 when her mother, Bette, and a neighbor, Alice McFee, left/disappeared. We find out on the first page that Lulu hid a note and let everyone in town, including the police, think the two women had mysteriously disappeared. Lulu is the youngest Parson, with four older brothers, of whom Geordie, the eldest brother (and ten years Lulu’s senior), is intellectually challenged, all were left in their father and maternal Aunt Kat’s hands.Doris was 24 when Bette and Alice, disappeared. Doris, who is mute, is the daughter of the local Baptist preacher and she tends chickens and sells eggs (hence the chickens on the cover art). Doris, knows a LOT about the goings-on in the town because of her daily interactions egg selling, and because she LISTENS. And there is a LOT going on in this little town with its varied denizens - from sweet Mrs. Ogg, to the entirely unique character of Aloysius McFee, whose relationship with Lulu is like nothing I've ever read before, (and will possibly be a point of controversy among readers.)Forty years later, Lulu is a semi-famous, nomadic song writer and fiddle player. She returns home for a wedding when a major event happens that changes everything. I was riveted. Higdon gradually reveals the answers to the little mysteries she skillfully sets up (e.g., whose wedding was Lulu home for?); Higdon’s pacing is perfect.I lapped up the first half of this novel like a hungry kitten lapping up a bowl of milk. But when I realized I was in the middle, now fully invested in the story and it’s various mysteries, (and totally in love with most of the characters) I tried to slow down and SAVOR Higdon’s glorious creation. Her folksy storytelling and wry humor, the intelligence and humanity that shine through her characters, are a testament to her skill as a writer; I hope this is just the beginning of Higdon’s novel writing career, because I am hungry for more. (In fact, I’d like to read more about the Parson and McFee families – there are stories left to tell, mini-mysteries to reveal!)Billed as a story of mothers and daughters, "The Very Marrow of Our Bones" is much more than that; it is a gripping and often shocking story about loss, siblings, and family; it's a modern masterpiece.

THE VERY MARROW OF OUR BONESI finished this book this afternoon and cried my eyes out. The writing is beyond superb. The characters are so fleshed-out they almost jump off the pages. They did jump directly into my heart. The story line is beyond amazing. This definitely makes my top five books of 2018. It is hard to believe that this is author Christine Higdon's first novel. Her writing is JUST. THAT. GOOD.To say too much about this book would ruin the reading experience for those of you who have yet to enjoy this marvelous piece of literature. So -The year is 1967 and two women disappear off the face of the Earth in the small town of Fraser Arm. Nobody has any ideas or clues as to what happened to neighbors Bette Parsons or Alice McFee. They are just gone. Did they leave together? Did they run into foul play? Are they dead or alive? Why would they both leave their husbands and families? Missing people just don't happen in Fraser Arm --This story is told from the perspective of Lulu Parsons, daughter of missing Bette Parsons. Lulu discovered something after her mom went missing but told nobody. She carries her secret in her young heart. She tells her story, along with that of her brothers, father, aunt, and the people who come and go throughout her life as we watch her age into her late adult life.Another person to relay her story is Doris Tenpenny whose life is also affected by the two missing women. Doris cannot speak. She carries pencils and notepads with her in order to communicate. Doris is wise beyond her years and sees the world as most people don't. People tell Doris all of their secrets, gossip, and confide in her since they know their deepest wishes and thoughts are safe with Doris.Doris and Lulu's lives have always been interwoven, but as they age their lives loop and wrap together even tighter. They each tell the story in alternating chapters -- a format I absolutely love -- and they tell their stories WELL.As mentioned, this is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It is so character driven. Now that I am done reading it, I feel as if I have lost some of my best friends. Life in Fraser Arm is a close knit community and Lulu and Doris, along with their families and friends, make life seem so warm and inviting. But always lurking in the background of the book and in all of the characters minds -- and YOUR mind -- is the always present questions regarding the two missing women and what happened.Read this book. I am so glad that I did. I pray Christine Higdon is planning to continue writing, she has such talent. This is a book I think you would love, it comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
