From School Library Journal
K-Gr 3—An illustrated take on how seven real kids from different countries go about a typical day. Each spread introduces a new topic (family, teachers, chores, dinner, play, etc.) and dedicates a panel to each child, identified by country, with glossary words underlined ("Iran: I live in a second-floor apartment in the city of Gorgan, close to the Caspian Sea."). Lamothe was able to create the digitally rendered illustrations based on photos sent to him by the families featured (a family photo for each child is included at the end). The muted palette in combination with the level of detail makes for a pleasing visual experience. An ending spread with a night sky scattered with stars and a glowing full moon is accompanied by the words, "This is my night sky," hinting that though these kids may lead very different lives, they all sleep under the same sky. In the "Meet the Families" section, Lamothe emphasizes that "not everyone in Peru likes to play soccer, and not everyone in Japan eats fish for breakfast," smartly communicating that the work is just one representation of much larger, complex communities. Endpapers provide a visual map of each child's name and country, including a cameo of the author. VERDICT A good purchase to refresh social science and geography collections.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI

I love this book--and my kids like it too. It goes beyond the ordinary country comparisons (for example, only one of the kids lives in a capitol city, so you don't just get "Jean lives in Paris and eats baguettes") and it's full of the nitty-gritty details that fascinate kids. My son is amazed that kids in Peru drink coffee. The families are economically as well as ethnically diverse, but the book doesn't make a big deal about how "diverse" it is. It describes without comment families with 8 children who sleep next to each other on boards and families with two children who have their own rooms, families that eat basically the same thing three meals per day, and families that don't. We have the Kindle version but I'd like to get paper version some day because the illustrations are rich and beautifully colored.
What an interesting way to teach different cultures - just go through their daily life and compare all of them side by side. It shows you how similar we are and how different our cultures are. I read the book cover to cover in one sitting completely glued and I am an adult. Should be great for kids. My only complaint is that they did not explain what some of the foods were IN the text and who is going to flip to the back of the book to read definitions every other sentence? Just describe the foods ON THE meal pages.
This book is very nice, beautiful pictures and I love that it shows different parts of life for 7 different children from around the world. However, I was disappointed by the format of the book. I found it confusing that each page shows everything from all seven kids lives. All seven outfits they wear, all seven different meals they eat. I wouldn't mind so much if the order on the page at least stayed the same throughout the book, but the order shown (by country) changes each time. I found it confusing to follow myself, so I doubt my kids who I was hoping to use the book with as a teaching tool will be able to follow very easily. I wish the book would just go one child/country at a time. I think it would be easier to compare and contrast that way.
This will be the first picture book I share with my class this year - and it will be a jumping off point for so many great explorations and writings! We live in an age when our children need to be aware of (and accepting of) the many diverse cultures we have globally. Matt makes learning about 7 other cultures a beautiful journey while uniting all with the simple theme of what happens in our days! I absolutely LOVE how it ends with the night sky that we all share - powerful message! This book should be enjoyed in every elementary classroom!
I LOVE THIS BOOK. Just putting it my classroom library next year will provide an excellent opportunity for students to develop social studies concepts. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying it myself! It is absolutely beautiful, and worth going back to again and again. (Those are the best classroom books!)In addition to the detailed artwork depicting how each child spends each part of his or her day, the book includes a photo of each child and their families, and a map to show where they live.I like the author's note and biographical information at the end. He tells how he compiled the information for making the book, and he outlines his own day. He is almost another character, an inspiring one! Thanks, Matt, for the writing idea for my students!
My 5-year-old loves this book! Since we've gotten it, we have read it countless times. She's kind of a foodie, so she particularly enjoys the breakfast, lunch, and dinner ones. It's also been great for her to recognize the letters/words of the names of other countries around the world as she prepares to enter kindergarten in the fall. She was very excited to show this to her grandpa who travels the world regularly, and he also appreciated it. Great purchase!
My 8-year-old daughter loves this book. She travels a lot and is interested in other cultures and social studies at school, and she's read this book over and over since we gave it to her, and even took it to school to read to her class because she loved it so much. She enjoys comparing her experience to the other kids', and trying to eat the food they eat when we're in their countries. The illustrations are lovely and the details included -- from real families highlighted at the end of the book -- really grab her imagination. If you have a child interested in the wide world around them and how people live in different cultures, I highly recommend this book.
I bought this book a few days after it was released and since then my 3.5 year old has requested to read it almost every day which is a real feat given that we own many books and also order new books on an almost weekly basis for him. As parents, my husband and myself also love this book for its insights as to how others live in the world. It covers everything from food to architecture to what the kids/family does on a daily basis. And most importantly the book shows us that no matter how different our circumstances (and how fortunate, to even be able to read this beautiful book and to be aware of it) we are all the same.
