First, this book on international style will never replace a teacher. If you want to learn international style, give yourself about a year with a private teacher. If you're a couple, figure 2 years. It is impossible to learn to dance from a book. Footsteps show alignment only. Books do not teach technique, and international style is all about technique. If you want to learn to dance socially, take private ballroom dance lessons with a good studio. This book is not for you.A piece of advice, Forget about group lessons. No one learns to dance in a group. This book is very clear and written for someone who knows how to dance.Last, you need to learn amalgamations, i.e., continuity. Learning one step at a time doesn't work. This book will tell you which figure precedes or follows a given figure.

Modern Ballroom Dancing: All the Steps You Need to Get You Dancing is an accurate title for a great little book. A dancer who studies and practices what this offers will indeed be dancing soon. It is good for steps but needs follow up with a coach for body positioning to help make the dancing more comfortable.

I purchased this book to compliment my dance instruction. Being that I take lessons in Japan, I needed a book, in English, which would reinforce and further explain what was being taught to me in class. I have found it a very useful book. However, this is not a book for a beginning dancer! The explanations and footwork patterns are detailed, but if you have no experience with ballroom dancing, the figures and explanations will mean very little to you. Some of the more complicated steps do not have foot diagrams, which would have been helpful. All and all, an excellent book!

This is a good book to summarize all steps for many popular dances. My only problem is it does not have step graph for every steps. Only about half of them are illustrated. One step graph wins thousands of words.

I have both the Victor Silvester book and Alex Moore's ISTD ballroom manual. I personally find the ISTD manual more compact, and a lot better organized. It is a little more expensive than Silvester, and it also has no pictures, but it is much more useful in my opinion. The Victor Silvester book is a ballroom instructor's manual with pictures, and the reader's understanding of the material will be exponentially proportional to his prior experience. That is, the beginners will not find it useful at all, while the intermediate and advanced dancers will be able to learn quite a bit from it. The pictures and figures are more like eye candy, as they are taken from dance competitions. They are not used to illustrate the steps.Although the book covers all ballroom steps from beginner to gold, it doesn't tell you which one is which. Also, it only covers up to latin bronze steps, and does not explain essential concepts such as Cuban motion and samba bounce. Unlike the other manuals, the Victor Silvester book also go over the basic steps for Viennese Waltz and (huh huh ...) disco. These steps are fairly basic. If the user are already at the level at which he can learn from the book, I doubt these steps would be too challenging. Also, a word of warning for the prospective dancers. I have seen (and met) a lot of people who try to learn from the book directly, only to be discouraged by the less than desirable results. What a lot of these books won't tell you, or at least convey effectively, are the fundamental aspects of partnered dancing, such as posture, communication, movement, and body connections. These aspects have to be taught and shown by a qualified instructor, because these points can't simply be put in words and are fundamental to all partnered dancing.

This is a pretty good book for anyone who's currently taking lessons in International-style dancing. It goes through all 10 dances used in International Rhythm and Smooth competition. The author presents about 12 or more variations in each dance. There are foot diagrams for about half the variations. He details the footwork (written), contrary body movement, timing, sway and amount of turn. All of the photos are of competitors at a dance event so they're not helpful if you're trying to learn how any figure looks. I don't think it's a book to buy if you're starting to learn how to dance but if you're already taking lessons, it's a good book to reinforce what you're learning. American-style is not covered at all.

I've been ballroom dancing for quite a while, and I bought this book in order to learn some more dance steps over and beyond the basics. I found the descriptions and diagrams IMPOSSIBLE to understand, and the steps I could figure out ended up being out of place among the steps that I usually dance. I think this book is only good if you're a dance teacher who is used to reading steps in a certain format and can translate them into motion. If you're a beginner, this book will do you NO GOOD!

MODERN BALLROOM DANCING has been valuable to me in improving my skills in those dances with which I was already familiar. The usefulness seemed to have been in direct proportion to what I knew before reading the book. It has not been very helpful in learning new dances. The text includes several dazzling photos of competitive dancers in action.

This Is How We Do It: One Day in the Lives of Seven Kids from around the World, by Matt Lamothe

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—An illustrated take on how seven real kids from different countries go about a typical day. Each spread introduces a new topic (family, teachers, chores, dinner, play, etc.) and dedicates a panel to each child, identified by country, with glossary words underlined ("Iran: I live in a second-floor apartment in the city of Gorgan, close to the Caspian Sea."). Lamothe was able to create the digitally rendered illustrations based on photos sent to him by the families featured (a family photo for each child is included at the end). The muted palette in combination with the level of detail makes for a pleasing visual experience. An ending spread with a night sky scattered with stars and a glowing full moon is accompanied by the words, "This is my night sky," hinting that though these kids may lead very different lives, they all sleep under the same sky. In the "Meet the Families" section, Lamothe emphasizes that "not everyone in Peru likes to play soccer, and not everyone in Japan eats fish for breakfast," smartly communicating that the work is just one representation of much larger, complex communities. Endpapers provide a visual map of each child's name and country, including a cameo of the author. VERDICT A good purchase to refresh social science and geography collections.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI

I love this book--and my kids like it too. It goes beyond the ordinary country comparisons (for example, only one of the kids lives in a capitol city, so you don't just get "Jean lives in Paris and eats baguettes") and it's full of the nitty-gritty details that fascinate kids. My son is amazed that kids in Peru drink coffee. The families are economically as well as ethnically diverse, but the book doesn't make a big deal about how "diverse" it is. It describes without comment families with 8 children who sleep next to each other on boards and families with two children who have their own rooms, families that eat basically the same thing three meals per day, and families that don't. We have the Kindle version but I'd like to get paper version some day because the illustrations are rich and beautifully colored.

What an interesting way to teach different cultures - just go through their daily life and compare all of them side by side. It shows you how similar we are and how different our cultures are. I read the book cover to cover in one sitting completely glued and I am an adult. Should be great for kids. My only complaint is that they did not explain what some of the foods were IN the text and who is going to flip to the back of the book to read definitions every other sentence? Just describe the foods ON THE meal pages.

This book is very nice, beautiful pictures and I love that it shows different parts of life for 7 different children from around the world. However, I was disappointed by the format of the book. I found it confusing that each page shows everything from all seven kids lives. All seven outfits they wear, all seven different meals they eat. I wouldn't mind so much if the order on the page at least stayed the same throughout the book, but the order shown (by country) changes each time. I found it confusing to follow myself, so I doubt my kids who I was hoping to use the book with as a teaching tool will be able to follow very easily. I wish the book would just go one child/country at a time. I think it would be easier to compare and contrast that way.

This will be the first picture book I share with my class this year - and it will be a jumping off point for so many great explorations and writings! We live in an age when our children need to be aware of (and accepting of) the many diverse cultures we have globally. Matt makes learning about 7 other cultures a beautiful journey while uniting all with the simple theme of what happens in our days! I absolutely LOVE how it ends with the night sky that we all share - powerful message! This book should be enjoyed in every elementary classroom!

I LOVE THIS BOOK. Just putting it my classroom library next year will provide an excellent opportunity for students to develop social studies concepts. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying it myself! It is absolutely beautiful, and worth going back to again and again. (Those are the best classroom books!)In addition to the detailed artwork depicting how each child spends each part of his or her day, the book includes a photo of each child and their families, and a map to show where they live.I like the author's note and biographical information at the end. He tells how he compiled the information for making the book, and he outlines his own day. He is almost another character, an inspiring one! Thanks, Matt, for the writing idea for my students!

My 5-year-old loves this book! Since we've gotten it, we have read it countless times. She's kind of a foodie, so she particularly enjoys the breakfast, lunch, and dinner ones. It's also been great for her to recognize the letters/words of the names of other countries around the world as she prepares to enter kindergarten in the fall. She was very excited to show this to her grandpa who travels the world regularly, and he also appreciated it. Great purchase!

My 8-year-old daughter loves this book. She travels a lot and is interested in other cultures and social studies at school, and she's read this book over and over since we gave it to her, and even took it to school to read to her class because she loved it so much. She enjoys comparing her experience to the other kids', and trying to eat the food they eat when we're in their countries. The illustrations are lovely and the details included -- from real families highlighted at the end of the book -- really grab her imagination. If you have a child interested in the wide world around them and how people live in different cultures, I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book a few days after it was released and since then my 3.5 year old has requested to read it almost every day which is a real feat given that we own many books and also order new books on an almost weekly basis for him. As parents, my husband and myself also love this book for its insights as to how others live in the world. It covers everything from food to architecture to what the kids/family does on a daily basis. And most importantly the book shows us that no matter how different our circumstances (and how fortunate, to even be able to read this beautiful book and to be aware of it) we are all the same.
