This book has some interesting details, but it appears that it is filled with "side bars" that show up in the e-book texts as unexpected interruptions in the narrative. The author also suggests looking up particular sections, going back to read cover-to-cover if you're interested in the background of a particular section. As simple as that might be to do with a printed text, it is very difficult to do with an e-book, "bookmarks" notwithstanding. In other words, I would recommend that the seriously interested reader buy a print version rather than an electronic one.

Seriously - the amount of research that went into this book is astounding. Ever had a question about how a particular style came about and how it's made? Where which beers are popular and how to toast them in their respective countries? What foods to pair with which beer? The ABV content of your favorite ale and how it compares to others of the same style? I guarantee you'll find the answers to these and any other beer related question you can think of somewhere in this book's hefty 644 pages. This book really blew me away with just how much information is contained within it. Whether you're a seasoned beer snob or just an aspiring one, I think you'll be super impressed with this book.

What a fabulous book! I got this for my husband who works in the beer industry and he just loves it. Whether you work in the industry or are just a beer fan you will get such use out of this book! Also, Amazon has this priced at about 25% less than any store I looked for it in!

Jeff Alworth applies his 15 years beer writing experience to providing an essential handbook for beer lovers. He divides the book into 6 parts. The first covers the history of beer, how it is made and how to taste it. The next four parts cover beer styles and the final part covers the enjoyment of beer. The tasting chapter in the first part is especially good, providing the beer drinker some important tools to build on. His groupings and breakdowns of styles and sub-styles are not as extensive as some but they make sense for the beer drinker. He groups styles into Ales, Wheat Beers, Lagers, and Tart and Wild Ales. For each sub-style in these categories he describes the style, discusses its origins and how it is made. He also profiles a brewery that makes the particular sub-style and describes 6 beers that exemplify the style. The example beers are generally beers with a fairly large distribution. His flavor descriptors are good and from reading them it is obvious that he has actually had the beer he is describing. The final part on the enjoyment of beer covers serving and storing beer, pairing beer with food, pub behavior and beer tourism. He concludes with nearly 50 pages of appendices with useful information for the beer lover. If you like beer and want to know more about it, buy this book.

As an avid beer drinker I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Its a great read for someone just getting into beer or if you've been a beer drinker for years and are looking to expand your knowledge. The beer bible is broken down into different sections explaining the different styles of beer and giving examples of each type. There also is a section about general knowledge of beer, and information about how to enjoy the perfect glass of beer.

When I bought this, it had no descriptions of anything being wrong with it… When it arrived it had writing on the inside as a dedication to somebody… I contacted the seller and they returned my money, which is one of the reasons why am giving five stars. The book itself has a lot of interesting information… it is a very good book for anyone who loves beer.

Jeff is a friend of mine. I know him to be a fine researcher and writer. What he's done here is put together an excellent overview of beer history, styles and much more. The book is required reading for everyone who wants or needs to know more about the origins of traditional and non-traditional beer styles.. Frankly, I do not care for the way the content is spoon fed to readers in small chunks. But I understand why that approach works with modern readers who typically have short attention spans and are easily distracted.

Just received the book to find that the back page has a large god damn crease across it. I'm giving this as a gift, and it really sucks when you get something that could have been easily caught. I don't have time to return it, otherwise that would be my first option.

This book is inspiring and informative. It takes the reader behind the scenes of an author and chronicles his artistic awakening and the beginnings of his creative output. At Makerere University College, a famous institution in Kampala, Uganda, Thiong'o found his calling as a writer, a weaver of dreams. His early disappointment when his winning play was not produced at the Kampala National Theatre was followed by many triumphs. His writing output as a student is impressive--novels, short stories, plays, essays, and numerous published journalistic articles. In the background, colonization was ending. He entered Makerere as a colonized person; he left as "a citizen of an independent Kenya."

I truly enjoyed reading this book; so much so, that I finished reading it in two business days. I truly enjoyed getting deeper and first hand insight into how an African experienced the period of transition from European rule to independence. And, I never realized the status of Makerere university.

Excellent memoir by the author who is long overdue for the Nobel prize in literature. He writes about history, colonialism, and his personal coming of age with nuance and inspiration.

In this wonderful memoir, Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong’o recounts the four years he spent in Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda—threshold years where he found his voice as a playwright, journalist, and novelist, just as Uganda, Kenya, Congo, and other countries were in the final throes of their independence struggles."Which seems simple enough, but is not.Ngugi wa Thiong'o (mostly referenced as James Ngugi in the book) writes in depth about the politics of the time - from 1959, when he first entered Makerere University College as a subject of a British Crown Colony until 1964, when he left as a citizen of an independent African state - his birth and growth as a writer being deeply affected by and entwined with the struggle of the African countries for independence. The things he describes are at the same time foreign - so much blood! So much oppression - and yet familiar; Malaysia's struggle for independence and the continued impact of British colonialism gives me, as a reader, a certain shared basis of understanding - or so I would like to think. [It would also seem that the Malay Sultanate may have had a larger mitigating impact - influence, maybe - on the amount of power the British were able to exert in Malaya than I had previously realised. Like any self-respecting English teacher, I take the threat of a book being plucked from its shelf seriously. Heck, I've lived it when a former fourth grade student admitted to me on last day of school that he had taken numerous copies of Philip Pullman's THE GOLDEN COMPASS throughout the year at his mother's request...I kept replacing the copy thinking that if it disappeared, at least it was being read. Ugh.That's why this title intrigued me. Knowing that Alan Gratz was wildly popular in my room thanks to his thought-provoking Refugee, I dove into it during the long winter break with a happy heart. I wasn't disappointed. Ban This Book will spark rich discussion about the First Amendment, civil disobedience, and learning to find your voice. After all, we should speak all "speak our mind, even if our voice shakes."'I was lucky. My parents would buy me any book I wanted if I asked them to. But not everybody's parents would do that. Not everybody's parents COULD do that. That's what libraries were for: to make sure that everybody had the same access to the same books everyone else did.'

I love children’s books. This book is now my most highly recommended book. I’m thinking 4th and 5th graders would get the most out of it. It is a story of a small school that has one “PTA president” that keeps insisting more and more books should be taken off the shelves of the school library. It about a little girl who lives with her mother and father and two little sisters in a small house....at times the only place she can find to read is the bathtub. When her favorite books start disappearing she decides to create the BBLL (Banned Books Locker Library). It’s full of fun and close calls. I read it aloud to my granddaughter....we laughed until we cried. It also provided great conversation at our Sunday dinner.

I have read a few Alan Gratz books and enjoyed them all, but Ban this Book is by far his best. This book has a lot of things going for it. It has a little African-American girl as the main character, the Banned Books Locker Library which is a form of student protest which has been encouraged in light of the Florida shootings, and well rounded characters. Even the antagonist of the book, who could have easily been made into a stereotypical villain, is fully fleshed out with her point of view being sympathized with. The best part of the book though is it is a reminder that school boards hold an enormous amount of power to decide what books will be available in the school library. If the wrong elements are influencing these school boards, books are going to be banned that shouldn't. What was especially interesting was that the kids come up with all these ridiculous reasons to ban books, all of which have been argued in real life. It makes you realize how lucky we are to have choice and for students to have choice in what they read.

I read "Ban This Book" over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. The story moves fast even though a lot of interwoven issues are dealt with. The characters are well-defined (so nice to read about intelligent, resourceful young people), the dialogue is snappy, the vocabulary is rich, and the plotline is dear to my heart. I gave my copy to a friend immediately and am about to buy another to send to my sister.

Outstanding! This book is working at three primary levels - a love letter to children's literature, a commentary on censorship, and the journey of a 4th grader to find her voice both at home and at school. This succeeds on all three levels. I highly recommend this book to parents/grandparents as well as teachers and school/public librarians.

I started reading this book last night & just finished it. What an INCREDIBLE story!!! It is now officially one of my Top 5 books of all time. Thank you Alan Gratz for creating an amazing storyline & genuine characters.

I read this book aloud to my 8 year old, and we both really enjoyed it. It presents several good issues in a child-accessible way through well-written prose. It also inspired my daughter to want to read several of the 'banned books' and to start her own locker library (the books have been read, she doesn't have a locker in third grade which has hindered her plans for a library but she's very optimistic about having one in middle school).

Super Crunchers is that easy way! Below I have summarized some of the important points of the book....Super Crunching is crucially about the impact of statistical analysis on real-world decisions. Two core techniques for Super Crunching are the regression and randomization.1. Regression will make your predictions more accurate (Historical approach):It all starts with the use of regressions, and although this method is a basic statistical test of causal relationship it's still a very powerful tool that I need to re-introduce in my analytical life.Regressions make predictions and tell you how precise the prediction is. It tries to hone in on the causal impact of a variable on a dependent. It can tell us the weights to place upon various factors and simultaneously tell us how precisely it was able to estimate these weights.2. Randomization and large sample sizes (Present/Real-Time approach):Reliance on historical data increases the difficulty in discerning causation. Large randomized tests work because the distribution amongst the sample are increasingly identical. Think A/B testing on steroids that allows you to quickly test different combinations! Boils down to the averages of the "treated and untreated" groups.Government has embraced randomization as the best way to test what works. Statistical profiling led to smarter targeting of government supportWith finite amounts of data, we can only estimate a finite number of causal effects3. Neural networkUnlike the regression approach, which estimates the weights to apply to a single equation, the neural approach uses a system of equations represented by a series of interconnected switches.Computers use historical data to train the equation switches to come up with optimal weights. This book contained more information than many of the trailheads did to help us navigate hikes and there were several trailheads we may have missed if not for the detailed descriptions/directions included. The book was well organized and helped us fit all of the hiking we could in our week long visit. My favorite part about the book is that, despite the detail provided, it is small enough to stick in a hiking pack without being noticeable. I kept the book in my pack the whole trip and used it frequently to reference landmarks, details and maps. I would recommend this book to anyone interested hiking in the area- we had very poor cell and gps signal most of our time in the Catskills, so this guide really saved the day a few times!!

It's a wonderful book with directions (including GPS punch-ins), distance, elevations and proper maps. The trail descriptions are accurate and succinct. Both beginning and serious hikers will find this to be an outstanding purchase.

His primary thesis is that crowds become entities that surpass any of the individual members and essentially take on a life of their own. He also provides compelling details about the types of men that rise to govern and lead crowds. What is so remarkable about this book is the fact that it was written before, but provides such a spot on depiction of what would come to be with Hitler and Germany during WWII. That horrific fact of history makes the book worth reading. On the downside, one observation that does disqualify the book as a whole is Le Bon's diminution of women.The ending is superb. I will not give it away, but his focus on the erosion of individual liberty and the extreme dangers it poses is very relevant today and his accounting of the cycle of all civilizations is thought provoking and astute. It also contributes to the much needed warnings of the dangers of concentrating powers.

The Crowd is the most highlighted book on my kindle. Le Bon heaps one penetrating insight upon another in this timeless masterpiece. It is as depressing as it is uplifting; I do not recommend it to people with weak stomachs or to naive humanists with delusions about the inherent goodness of humanity. Likewise though who think of democracy as a natural and sustainable system should avoid this book, lest they become flustered from momentum of its case. Cognitive dissonance is a terrible illness and Le Bon is bound to to give it to a few naive readers. I do not recommend it to elitists who cannot see that they are also members of The Crowd. If you are at all interested in any branch of the humanities this belongs in your library. Plus, you can't beat the price!

I also found instructive the discussion of the different meanings of the word "democracy" between the Latin peoples and the Anglo-Saxon ones.2) At location 357, he writes, "Crowds are everywhere distinguished by feminine characteristics, but Latin crowds are the most feminine of all. Whoever trusts in them may rapidly attain a lofty destiny, but to do so is to be perpetually skirting the brink of a Tarpeian rock, with the certainty of one day being precipitated from it." And at location 485, he writes, "Like women, a throng goes at once to extremes." I take these two comments as an insult to women, albeit written in 1895.3) At location 461, he writes, "Works of history must be considered as works of pure imagination. They are fanciful accounts of ill-observed facts, accompanied by explanations the result of reflection. To write such books is the most absolute waste of time." And at location 479, he writes, "history is scarcely capable of preserving the memory of anything except myths." Well, I wouldn't go that far, and I think serious historians wouldn't agree with him either.Then, at location 697, he writes, "It was by becoming a Catholic," said Napoleon to the Council of State, "that I terminated the Vendeen war. By becoming a Mussulman that I obtained a footing in Egypt. By becoming an Ultramontane that I won over the Italian priests, and had I to govern a nation of Jews I would rebuild Solomon's temple."How do you justify the validity of this quote (and several others like it throughout the book) in light of what he wrote above at locations 461 & 479?!!!!4) At location 771, he writes, "Illumined one day by the light of reason, he broke the images of divinities and saints that adorned the altar of a chapel, extinguished the candles, and, without losing a moment, replaced the destroyed objects by the works of atheistic philosophers such as Buchner and Moleschott, after which he piously relighted the candles. The object of his religious beliefs had been transformed, but can it be truthfully said that his religious sentiments had changed?"My answer is, "Yes, it can." Worshiping divinities and saints is not the same as valuing and respecting science and reason. If we follow his logic, no body would be allowed to believe enthusiastically in anything for fear of being labeled a fanatic.5) At location 1164, he writes, "The masses have never thirsted after truth. They turn aside from evidence that is not to their taste, preferring to deify error, if error seduce them. Whoever can supply them with illusions is easily their master; whoever attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim." This quote reminds me of Trump & his "alternative facts".6) At location 1180, he writes, "To bring about the recognition that Protection ruins the nations who adopt it, at least twenty years of disastrous experience will be needful." This message seems to be directed at Trump from the late 19th century.7) At location 1337, he writes, "Brain disorders, like madness, are themselves contagious. The frequency of madness among doctors who are specialists for the mad is notorious. Indeed, forms of madness have recently been cited—agoraphobia, for instance—which are communicable from men to animals." I very much dispute the accuracy of these statements.8) The classification of crowds starting at location 1679 is very disorganized and confusing.

Very interesting book in social psychology. I lost my original college copy and wanted to re-read it and compare and contrast this to Black lives Matter, the liberal left and the Republican party.
