As the primary author of one of the competing (photo) field guides to this, I can say that I was blown away when I opened this guide for the first time. The plates are next-level with wader/shorebirds plates being not only very impressive for Australia, but because they cover most East Asian vagrants so very well, they are among the best in the world. The multiple subspecies for many accounts (grass wrens for example) are clearly given and well illustrated so future taxonomic changes will not be too confusing for most birders. When users first open it up, they may feel overwhelmed by the mass of information on each species, but it is so well written that the wealth of information provided is easily digested and very useful.Just an amazing achievement for the authors and a must have for anyone thinking of birding in Australia

The illustrations in this guide are unparalleled, the maps are comprehensive, and the text is succinct and informative. Authors have admitted this is modeled after Europe's successful 'Colins Bird Guide.' If the popular 'Birds of Australia' (7th Ed.) by Simpson & Day were rated 4-stars, 'The Australian Bird Guide' would deserve 7-stars. That leap in guide quality is not over-exaggerated.The guide covers all of Australia, its associated oceanic economic exclusion zone, and all its political dependencies. The guide does not follow the phylogeny format, but rather the pragmatic bird guide sequence, which groups families into their broad biomes and non-passerines versus passerines. This is done using the valid argument that with rapidly developing DNA science, phylogeny will continue to change and many birders are not familiar with year on year changes.The illustrations are extremely comprehensive and are of art-level quality, displaying numerous subspecies, dimorphic plumage between genders and juveniles, often showing the species in flight, and even illustrating peculiar habits of some birds. The text describes wing span, bill length, and weight, with the illustrations being to scale, with a scale-bar on each page to indicate size. The text concisely describes the species and its gender/subspecies variants, voice, habitat, and some relevant information on its habits. A small drawback is that it can be difficult to determine at a single glace if a species is migratory, or what its nesting/breeding habits are. A major bonus, is that the distribution maps are colo(u)r coded, clearly showing where distinct subspecies occur and where birds are uncommon versus locally common to abundant.The index has some quirks that have been lamented by reviewers, and these have proven true: Not all birds are listed by their suffix and their prefix, i.e. the Eastern Koel (which is a cuckoo), can not be found under "K" in the index, only "Eastern Koel." Another complaint has been the book's size. Indeed, it is hefty. However, the Australian avifauna is huge at 936 species, illustrated in 4700 paintings. Expecting this comprehensive a guide and expecting anything similar to an Eastern or Western guide to North American birds in size, is unrealistic. This book has no wasted space and no plates that are either overtly large, or ridiculously small. 'The Australian Bird Guide' is the best you're going to get for this island continent, if not one of the best guides for any avifauna in the world.

The authors of this field guide have really done an amazing job. The drawings are fantastic. I love how they include comparisons when necessary showing size, facial patterns, etc. This also includes detailed notes which provide very useful information. I'd say this guide is comparable to Sibley for North American birds, except with more written content. Some have complained about the size. This is essentially identical in size to my Sibley, and in my opinion, not too big at all. They also include little pie charts indicating, in quarter increments, how easy it would be to find each species. This is a fun addition that also is helpful. Would highly recommend this book and I'm looking forward to using it during my upcoming trip to Australia.Several common complaints that I'd like to address:1. The index is in in alphabetic, not taxanomic order (eg. you can't look up just Robin, you have to look up Rose Robin). I never found this to be an issue, because I always could think of a specific species within that category to look up, in order to get me into the right section.2. Wingspan instead of length is used. While this is a bit odd, I still didn't find this to be an issue because I mostly used these values to compare for relative size of species within a group (eg. Great Egret vs Intermediate Egret), and the wingspan does a fine job at showing this relative size.

I bought this book for a cruise my family took in Australia. We took a day trip to the Blue Mountains and spent a few days in Sydney beforehand. Apart from the ordering of the birds throughout the book--which differs from Sibley and other North American guides and may confuse birders experienced with those works, but is probably more accessible to complete novices--the book was highly functional. If you can get over it's size (roughly similar to Sibley's Birds of North America but much bigger than the East/West guides more often taken into the bush), it is a fantastic field reference. The plates are very professionally done and the text includes a wealth of information about behavior and expected habitat. Especially useful to an Australian novice were the symbolic indications of relative abundance.Especially important to me were the quality of the pelagic seabird plates. Many guides struggle to give adequate illustrations for distinguishing tricky seabirds (and get away with it because so few birders venture out to pelagic waters). This guide did not disappoint in the middle of the Tasman Sea, and I continued to refer to it while in New Zealand waters just because the plates were so much better done than my accompanying New Zealand book.

I think I have a new favorite writer. While not overtly Christian, this book is loving, realistic, and truthful without being sensational or sappy, and, thankfully, without the trend of foul language, which I am greatly disturbed by. I loved the characters, and the elements about how families interact and deal with each other. Betsy stole my heart, as I feel I am most like her, and yet always wished I was more like Jenna. I loved this story and wish Ms. Denton would write a sequel!

Ms. Denton has written another moving, beautiful book. This book was impossible to put down. For me, it was a wonderful break from the harsh realities of today. If you enjoy reading for pure pleasure, don't pass this one up.

It is an even story about a relationship between two sisters who love each other but are not as close as they both would like to be. Through the course of one summer, they get to know each other better and find that the preconceived notions they each had about the other was not really the case. In some ways the story was predictable, however I enjoyed the different settings and the character developments.

I really enjoyed Lauren Denton’s first novel, The Hideaway, so I thought I would try this one. It surpassed The Hideaway in so many ways, always keeping me guessing, hoping and wondering what would happen for these two sisters and their families...which choices they would make. Both novels are good, clean, interesting and fun stories. They got me laughing and tearing up - occasionally both at one time. Unlike The Hideaway, which wrapped up fairly nicely, Hurricane Season left me wanting a sequel so I could find out what happens after this novel stops. I hope she will write one!

Lauren K. Denton is my favorite new author. I loved, loved, loved The Hideaway, and the Hurricane Season is just as wonderful. The characters are described and developed so that you grew along with their day to day life and their hopes and dreams. I felt like I knew the characters as if they were right beside me. And the Hurricane hit me as much as it did Alabama, I got so involved with the story, I actually felt the hurricane reports were for my area. I know, sounds like I might have been drinking something. but her writing is so vivid I felt like I was transported to Alabama. Thank you Ms. Denton for another great book. Please, keep up the good work.

Two rocky relationships come to a climax in this novel--between two sisters and between a husband and wife. While the younger, freer-in-spirit sister Jenna pursues one of her dreams, the older sister and her husband, a farmer, care for the younger sister's two girls. Since Betsy, the older sister, and her husband Ty have not been able to have children of their own, there are emotional issues needing resolution. Meanwhile Jenna is exploring another male relationship and must make a difficult choice. The hurricane which blows through southern Alabama where the farm is located is a symbol of the turmoil in the various characters' lives. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in sister relationships, southern settings in literature, exploring the issue of infertility, and raising little girls on a farm. The pure joy of the city girls discovering the miracles of life on a farm was enjoyable. Devon O'Day skillfully read the MP3 CD version to which I listened.

I really enjoyed the characters and can I say, story. So many people end up guessing what others think as the years thunder by without knowing the truths. I know too many people who just have closed up or off. The hurt mostly themselves, but also their children and siblings. Denton is excellent at creating a visual, palpable background of places and people without TOO much of a narrative,. Some authors can feel condescending over describing or soupy. until OK we get it, This was fresh and interesting

Amid fertility struggles and an impending hurricane in Alabama, Ty and Betsy are struggling to connect like they did in the past. Jenna, Betsy’s sister, feels like her life is off track - she is raising two daughters on her own while working in a coffeehouse. She wants to find herself, and when she is offered a spot at an artists’ retreat, she sees a chance to really find her passion again. She asks her sister to watch her kids, and while the retreat keeps stretching longer than originally expected, Betsy and Ty find their world turned upside down in new ways, both wonderful and difficult. I found myself skipping over Jenna’s parts, but overall this one kept me awake during middle of the night feeds.

The book is replete with photographs and maps illustratration never published before in the multitude of President Nasser biographies. The author chronicles Nasser's conspiratorial role in forming and leading the "Free Officers Movement". How upon the execution of the July 23, 1952 revolution, he installed General Neguib who was senior in military rank compared to the thirty-four year old young Nasser. He remained behind the scenes of politics, but Nasser was the real power in Egypt. The author shows with concrete evidence that "Much of the change in Egyp", after the July 23, 1952, "canbe traced to a signle man. Gamal Abdel Nasser", who, "was one of the strongest middle Eastern Leaders", and one of the giants and remarkable statesmen of the 20th century, and one "of the most influential leaders of the twentieth century. The book narrates that "Though Nasser did not like to take advice he had the ultimate courage and sublime honesty...to take the blame for his own mistakes", as was, "the case with" the June 1967 setback. He resigned as President , but the people with that tempestuous eruption of emotions, as tens upon tens of thousands marched in the streets, both in Cairo, and in other cities in other Arab world ( Beirut, Sidon, Tripoli in Lebanon; Damascus and other cities in Syria, as well as in Jordan. Many politicians joined the marches and finally President Nasser complied with their request. The author concludes how Nasser dedicated his life to improve conditions in Egypt by abolishing feudalism and establishing land reforms, the evacuation of 80,000 British troops from Egypt after 74 years of occuption; the nationalization of the Suez Canal, and the crowning of his achievement by building the Awan High Dam which stores today 3 years of Nile water. In the Arab World Nasser was worshiped as the emblem of dignity and national pride, as the author succinctly put. Finally the author concludes by describing Nasser's premature death at age 52 of sudden heart attack , and how Nasser's death shocked the entire Arab world, as an event that has sparked the greates grief the world has ever seen: one million showed up in the streets of Cairo to mourn his death__Mutih Skeini

This book does a good job of explaining the basic concepts of how to be more inclusive and think of others. Unfortunately, it's now incredibly dated. Some language in our society has improved, but not everyone understands the underlying concepts - so we now have change on the surface., that doesn't really address the lack of inclusivity. Also, the author used many examples from her own life, and these examples sometimes fall short of an ideal demonstration of her concept. In the concepts section, the author provides a story of an "explain away" in which someone tried to tell her that an experience she had that smacked of being thought of as "less then" by male car salesmen who probably thought a woman wouldn't be a good person to sell a car to. She identifies the person explaining away as a black male. What does the male being black have to do with this? Simply the fact that the explain away-er is not a woman is enough. This same story just wasn't as crystal clear as what many people experience with explain aways.I am sure the author could find people who are willing to share their experiences in an updated version of the book. This would allow her to draw from a greater pool of experience, while also using more real-life stories from people in various groups.Overall, the point the author tries to make about the way in which someone who can't really understand the frustrations of marginalized people, minorities, or other folks who simply aren't understood by the majority in our society is an important one, and it's worth keeping this current to help people truly be able to connect with one another when that is what they are trying to do. The points the author tries to make in this book can make people with the best intentions much more effective at listening and getting along with others.

Easy read. Good reminders. One or two new thoughts made this worth the time. Liked the explanation of the difference between our intent and our impact. Just because we didn't intend harm, doesn't mean we didn't cause harm. Also, includes a great way to explain social injustice to someone who hasn't experienced it.

Wow, this helped me understand I have a long way to go as a well-intentioned person. An easy read with applicable advice.

By the end it's been a little repetitive, but that's not bad. It means there are some general principles to be learned about how comments affect others that can be applied to situations not exactly covered in the 25.

This is an incredibly practical resource and an easy way to get at intent and impact. The core concepts are concise and spot on! I'm going to use several of these with Presbyterian congregations that want to become more culturally effective and go from meaning well to doing well. Maura Cullen breaks it down and makes it doable.

Good information was included in this book, but it was very repetitive in nature. The 35 "things" could have been summarized into about 10-15 things in my opinion. The first chapter, and subsequent two following chapters, provided great detail, action items and preferred actions. The ten concepts provided a great foundation for the rest of the book. Unfortunately, the book could have ended there. As a person of color, I felt like the author was working to compare oppression levels amount identity groups, particularly between racism and discrimination based on sexual identity. This was not effective, nor was a detailed enough description given to better understand the two areas of oppression. For someone who does not understand diversity concepts or doesn't have a strong historical understanding of social justice issues, the book served as a brief book full of "suggested" terms and actions. Overall, I'm appreciative of the work and allyship of the author.

I play a word search on my phone but I really love getting to highlight the words on paper. When I looked online, there were a ton of large print word searched which wasn't what I was looking for. This book is a great size (I think it'd also be great for older generations) and has one puzzle per page which is great. The book size is big but can fit in a purse for those who find themselves with a lot of extra time on their hands. The puzzles are filled with words so your puzzle becomes essentially all highlighted but it doesn't bother me. I'd recommend this to others who like to occupy their mind with puzzles in their free time.

This book took my retired father in law quite some time to finish. He loved this book. It was compact and filled with tons of puzzles. Very glad we got this for him. He seems to blow through the cheap word searches very quickly. This actually took some time!

I thought this would be a lot harder, but it wasn't. It's still easy to run through puzzles, and I don't really like that. However, it is a lot of puzzles, and it's compact in size, which is perfect for the bus rides to work and back. Because of the compact size, I like this option, and can give it 4 stars. It's small, has a lot of puzzles, and well, it works. It's not difficult, but that's just my take on it.

I got this book for my 83-year-old Mom and she loved it. She said it was easier to hold than the larger books. She asked me to get more in this size.

I bought this so I can bring it with me to work so I had something to do during my break, other than be on my phone. I’m lucky to have a pretty big locker at my workplace but I wanted a small and portable one and I can’t wait to bring this in!

A bit easy to solve, some are more of a challenge. Got it to do at my work in my downtime and I'm super happy with the purchase. The paper is thick and sturdy to rip out a page and take it with me in my pocket, as well as, write on it in my hand (2 sheets: 4 puzzles. Folded in half). You can't see the pen through the paper. It has 1 puzzle per page with the word list on bottom below the puzzle on said page. 4 puzzles take me 2 hours during work when there are no customers and i'm multitasking.

I really like this word search book, the font is large and the pages are nice and thick. I also found it helpful for my mom who is mainly a Spanish speaker, to practice some of the English words based on the topic of the page.

This is travel size which is nicer than I first thought it would be. If you like word search puzzles it's a must have.
