This book is large, but very readable and the author manages to keep things interesting through all four of Columbus’ voyages of discovery. It was written by Samuel Eliot Morison after he retraced Columbus’ voyages in 1939-1940 with the Harvard Columbus Expedition.Morison, who won the Pulitzer Prize for this work, humanizes Columbus, who is fleshed out warts and all. Columbus is intensely religious, loyal, at times a bore, a peerless admiral and navigator, a so-so and at times poor administrator, courageous, brilliant and at times extremely hardheaded. He made mistakes, took slaves, died under appreciated, yet still completed four of the most important voyages in the history of mankind. He never gave up on the idea that he had actually discovered a new route to the orient, and never fully realized what he had actually found. He was double crossed by his own crew multiple times, faced mutinies, battled arthritis, and was actually led back to Spain in chains following his third voyage.One of the things we struggle with understanding today is the fact that Columbus (and Magellan, along with many other explorers) had no idea where they were going. There were literally no maps at the time to show them what was on the other side of the ocean, or even if there was another side. It takes unbelievable courage to plunge headfirst off the edge of the map and most people now simply cannot understand what it took to face this complete uncertainty without hope of rescue while being responsible for the lives of the crew and property of the crown while doing it.This is a terrific book, well researched and full of interesting details. Fans of true adventure, exploration, discovery, maps, world history and geography will love it.

I purchased the audiobook ($40 at the time I purchased it) on CD hoping it would include a way to access the illustrations in the book (e.g., paper insert, additional DVD, etc.). Of course, it didn't. Then, when I tried to transfer the MP3 tracks using either Windows 10 or iTunes, only some of the tracks transferred in Windows, and iTunes would not even recognize the disc. Requested a replacement disc, and only some of those tracks transferred, also. I see the price has dropped considerably. When it gets down to $.99, you might want to give it try. Otherwise, buyer beware!

A good, thorough biography of an obviously important person in the Age of Discovery. I learned much about Christopho Colon, including his real name, from this well-written and very readable book. Though published in 1942, I would say it's still the authoritative biography of the person we know as Christopher Columbus, someone obviously extermely important in world history and to America in particular. I recommend this book to all who are interested in this era and even to those who are not.

If any of you would like to see the life of Columbus as it must have been will really like this book. I found that it is a book about his life and world, not just a biography. You start to get a feel for how different his world was and how much of history is made up by people because of our failure to see him as a navigator of life in "that" environment, not ours.I was amazed to find that Columbus truly felt that he had a divine commission and duty to voyage as he did, and much of the negativity I have heard from him now seems to be unsubstantiated attacks, completely ignoring the facts involved.I respect the man more now than I did, and I think that people might find that much of what we hear about early discovery and colonialism in the Americas has been distorted and the negative attributed to people who do not deserve it.

This book is the definitive work on Columbus. Morison is famous for making the same journey that Columbus made with largely the same equipment in order to prepare for writing this book. His experience shines through in the detail thatMorison lavishes on his subject.As is the case with any great biography, Morison has become enamored with his subject, highlighting his strengths and successes while downplaying his weaknesses and failures, but you know that going into any biography and can adjust your interpretation accordingly.The story here is told very well, keeping the reader engaged and turning pages. Additionally, the book dispells many of the myths and common misconceptions about Columbus and really fills in a complete picure of the man.Well worth reading for any fan of history or biography.

The topic is very interesting and I'm enjoying the story but I find my mind wandering and I really don't care for the narrator at all. His voice is annoying and sounds cocky, and he's reading in such a way that it makes the author sound like he was stuck up

These are the detailed "performance expectations" for students at various grade levels which define what kids should know and be able to do in schools that are teaching to the Next Generation Science Standards. The performance expectations are meant to drive assessment of student understanding, but are not meant to define a curriculum of study. Individual schools and districts can approach course sequencing and learning activities creatively; the standards just define what the kids should be able to do in the end.This work should be viewed as more of a reference text for teachers, school curriculum leaders, and test designers. It is very detailed, with many, many pages of individual performance expectations carefully broken down into what Disciplinary Core Idea(s), Crosscutting Concept(s), and Science/Engineering Practice(s) are woven together into that PE. Many are well done, but this was a document that was to some extent put together by committee. Actually committees (plural) of reviewers from lead states. It's not perfect, and requires some informed analysis and creativity to interpret. Careful readers will find occasional inconsistencies.For those who want an easier to read overview of the principles and research behind the Next Generation Science Standards, look instead at "A Framework for K-12 Science Education".

If you are involved in Science education for K - 12 I think you have no choice but to read this book. These are the new science guidelines that are being adopted by most States. I suggest that you keep a pencil & paper handy...I found that it helped to make notes until I became really familiar with the eye-rolling number of acronyms used in this program...be prepared to add "NGSS, SEPs, DCIs, CCs, frameworks, connections, clarification statements" and more to your pedagogy vocab list. It's pretty intense, especially when you consider that it's about to toss all the NCLB out the window. But, regardless of whether you approve or disapprove of this change, this book lays out the new guidelines very completely (from K - 12) and in what I suppose is the most clear way possible. What is additionally daunting is the fact that these are guidelines only...they deliberately don't take on content or content standards. Those are, I guess, state by state books yet to come.

If you think you might need this- YOU DO! It's so much more convenient to read the hard copy right in front of you than to look at the app online or trying to view it on your phone.

This has truly helped me make the transition to the NGSS.

The NGSS should be no surprise for anyone as it has been out in draft form for over a year! Opinions should already be formed one way or the other. I embrace these standards and will use them. I like having the Appendix as a separate book.

The standards are great, but this was only the appendices. Will be returning in the morning.

I was happy to received this order quickly. In addition it was wrapped neatly and delivered in great condition. I know my state has adopted Next Generation Science Standards and this book will be useful in understanding those changes.

This is a lovely packaged/presented collection of timeless children stories that I purchased for my niece. I'm sort of the poor, loser uncle so I hope she remembers I bought her something nice.

I absolutely love the quality of this book, it is well done, absolutely beautiful, amazing collection of these classic books! So excited to have them, read them and share them with others! It show cases her art and stories perfectly! I will include pictures, also if anyone likes history, I recommend listening to The History Chicks podcast on the life of Beatrix Potter, knowing about her life, her talent in art, and her love for animals among other things adds so much depth to these stories! I am not even kidding! The podcast isn't boring at all it's funny and interesting and made me love these stories all the more! Excited to have this beautiful edition to pass down to my children, and for a good price! Arrived on time as well, brand new, no damage!! Extremely Happy!!

For Beatrix Potter lovers, this book is a must. It has all the stories, with excellent reproductions of her original illustrations. There also are little prefaces that tell something about each particular stories publication. The quality of the paper, binding, etc. is first class.I read these stories to my children when they were little and look forward to reading them to my little grandson when he is old enough.

This is a beautiful series but had no number 7 and two number 11's. It was a gift to a grandchild shipped overseas so it was too difficult to return it.

We always borrow the single-book version from the library. They're in high demand so I decided to buy the full version. I was fully aware of the difference in format, but I was still a bit dismayed. The trouble is the suspense is gone with this format. Your kids will keep looking to the other pics further on in the story. I suggest you get this only after you've read many, or all, of the books, and just want to re-read for the pleasure of it. Or if (like me) you can't afford the boxed version yet. I do plan on getting the boxed set as a holiday present later this year. But I wanted to get this now. My kids are always asking to read their favorite stories. And I use this as a handy reference for homeschool copywork.

The Amazon Kindle version is miserable to read. The pictures are too small and the text is off with the pictures. Just buy this one in print.

If you're human you will love reading the quintessential children's stories by Beatrix Potter. In fact, if you are a grandparent you will love reading them even more. Every child should have her collection to save for their children. My grandchildren love this little library and believe it or not they take a book out then return it to its box. I think they are quite proud to own those 23 volumes of books exactly the right size for small hands. The art work is spectacular in this set. Let's face it children read not just for the story but the artwork too. I love all those little tales.

I was worried after reading some comments and reviews here on Amazon about these books, but the set I bought for my daughter is beautiful! We haven't made it through all of the books yet, but the ten we have read are perfect. Very detailed illustrations, perfect coloring, no fading or other issues that some people have had with these books. Very pleased.

I used to read these as a child and now that I have my own daughter i can't wait to read this to her. Beautiful book!
