Art lovers have cause to be thankful for Picasso's strong libido. This book is testament to his sexual desire and his amazing creative talent. It forms one of the series of Picasso associated publications issued in conjunction with exhibitions held at the Gagosian Gallery. The other volumes cover the Mediterranean years and the output of his last years (Mosqueteros). To those familiar with these excellent issues, they will yet again encounter the writings of the Picasso authority John Richardson. There are additionally essays by Diana Widmaier Picasso (The Marie-Therese Years) and Elizabeth Cowling (The Image of Picasso-Sculptor in the 1930s).Apart from the essays, there are numerous color illustrations of paintings and sculptures inspired by Marie-Therese Walter. While a number of these art works are famous and familiar, there are many more, often sourced from private collections, that are not commonly encountered. There are additionally numerous monochrome documentary photographs including those of Picasso, his muse and his studio. Furthermore there is a reprinting of Brassai's 1933 photographs of a number of Picasso's works. As with the other volumes in this series, the publication standards are of a luxurious standard and this book comes highly recommended.
This is a beautiful book, lavishly illustrated and informative. It explores the emotional and creative impact on Picasso of his love for Marie-Therese Leontine Walter, a secret relationship that endured for fourteen years. When they first met on a street in Paris, Picasso was forty-five and already the world's most famous painter. He was also married to Olga. Marie-Therese was a seventeen-year-old, statuesque blonde with a Roman nose.Over the next decade or so she inspired Picasso in ways that make this period in his career unique. He not only painted her but created a series of plaster and metal statues that were groundbreaking. This book not only has an introduction by John Richardson, Picasso's foremost biographer, but a perceptive chapter by Marie-Therese's grand-daughter, an art historian by profession. The best part of this book is it illustrations - paintings and photographs, revealing not only the range and quality o Picasso's work in this period but providing an intimate look at the relationship that probably had the most profound effect on him in his long and distinguished career.
On the heels of other museum-style exhibitions held over the last couple of years (Monet's Waterlilies, Picasso and the Mediterranee), the Gagosian Gallery has mounted another blockbuster accompanied by this catalog, a book full of rarely published illustrations (such as a series of flip-book photographs of Marie Therese, or full-page plates of paintings belonging to private collections). Compared to previous Gagosian publications, the quality of the plates is undeniably better. As for the text, it is lively, with two essays by Picasso scholar John Richardson detailing Marie Therese's life with Picasso and her influence on his art and a very personal view of their granddaughter, Diana Widmaier-Picasso on their relationship.A high -quality addition to the albeit mammoth-size literature on Picasso.
You will LOVE this book. Picasso picks up girl paints her in secret gets her pregnant leaves her and after he dies she hangs herself.Yes mad love.
