Amazon.com Review
An impressive offering, CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide does a terrific job of making networking basics approachable. Though written for those already familiar with technology, it nonetheless manages to clearly explain what makes networks work without undercutting their inherent complexity. Authors Lammle and Chellis set the stage by going through such fundamentals as local area network (LAN) devices, the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, and various data transport protocols. From there, the book delves into such topics as network congestion--what causes it and what to do about it--Internet protocol (IP) addressing and subnetting, interior routing protocols, and basic routing configuration. As is characteristic of any quality study guide, each chapter ends with a summary followed by a mountain of review questions, which are good practice for the written CCNA exam. Answers are listed in one of the six appendices, which also cover AppleTalk and related Request for Comments (RFCs). In addition, this book contains a fantastic 116-page glossary--again, a terrific feature for networking newcomers. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

I bought this book a few years ago when I was planning to take the CCNA exam but I was busy in a demanding job and didn't get around to the test till recently. When I went back to look at my materials I had also purchased the official Cisco training manuals. After looking at reviews here I was slightly concerned that the exam had changed in the last few years and didn't see a lot of current reviews. Thus, I started with the Cisco books and nearly fell asleep 3 times the first day I was going through them! I picked this book back up just to check out another style.Well, as many others have said, this book was just what I needed! It is clearly written, provides many examples, and has more of a conversational feel to it rather than the very technical and stiff style of writing. This book still brings the goods necessary to pass the test in 2010! There wasn't much that was on the actual exam that wasn't covered here. Is the book perfect? No, but people who say that this is not an adequate book to study for the exam really must not have read it and given it a real try. If you need prepare for the exam and need materials that are clear and concise, go with this book.I didn't see it mentioned in reviews elsewhere, but the author actually has a website of his own and keeps an active forum there for people to ask questions or for tips on things they are struggling with. I didn't look at the forum till near the end of my study, but it was great to see the author himself, Todd Lammle, replying to questions as well as many others invested in the open forum.I scored a 974 out of 1000 on the composite 640-802 exam using just this book and RouterSim's Network Visualizer. This was my primary studying source and Network Visualizer was my primary practicing source. Btw, RouterSim's simulator product is actually created with this book in mind - each chapter in the book corresponds to a set of labs that lets you go do things like set up EIGRP from scratch, or create VLANs, troubleshoot frame-relay connections, etc...In summary, don't have any doubts, Todd Lammle knows his stuff and conveys it in a very accesible way that works just as well for the test now as it did when the book was first published! I highly recommend this book. Good luck!
This book was a very valuable book. I bought this book thinking it would teach me a little bit about the ccna course. Well, I thought wrong, it taught me all that i needed to know. It took me about a week to read it and im happy i did. I passed the test with flying colors! :) I would recommend this book to whoever takes this test!
I havent passed the exam yet, but I am ready to do it. I should probably wait for the exam but to be honest i dont think I should. This book is supposed to be the one source for people preparing for the CCNA certification. I have studied from several sources and none are more interesting to read or cover the material with the depth Lammle does in this book. This one is a must to prepare for the CCNA and as a reference for future problems.I have been studying with a cousin who is a member of the Cisco Academy and even their interactive program cant compare to this book. The only thing I would change in it is how the information is organized. Maybe in a next edition the editors or the author should consider focusing the book in the two stages cisco now has the CCNA programs: the icnd1 and icnd2. This little remark is not enough to to take a star from this review though.Great work, Lammle and sybex. I will post about my experience with the CCNA exams (i am taking the two exams route)in a couple weeks.
I am about three chapters in and find this guide is pretty useful. I do have a background in IT, TCP/IP in particular so it is not foreign to me. I have no background in CISCO however. I have been able to make sense of things so far so I would say that the writing is pretty clear. It should be understood though that if you are totally green some things could be confusing. That's not a fault of the author. The book would be prohibitively long if every concept had to be explained to the extent necessary that, let's say your mother-in-law, would be comfortable with. For example: if you have at least seen a subnet mask or have any clue what it is used for the book will be helpful in providing clarity and understanding. If you've never heard of a subnet mask, or even a subnet, then you may struggle a bit. The book seems to be comprehensive and CISCO centric so I feel pretty confident that I will be able to pass the cert test the first time after completing this guide.
