This begins with actual history, as detailed by Jon Mooallem in American Hippopotamus, a true tale in which the United States actually considered and almost imported hippopotami. For various reasons this was not in fact done in real life, but this seriously possible history inspired author Sarah Gailey into writing a couple of novellas and a couple of prequel short stories, all contained herein or for the most part available separately: Worth Her Weight in Gold, "Nine and a Half", River of Teeth, and Taste of Marrow, set in an alternate United States in which this was in fact done, though about half a century earlier in her imagining.The best part? Clearly Sarah Gailey's imagining of what amounts to a VERY strange Western dealing with this most unusual situation. The worst part? While it is understandably tempting, especially in a slightly alternative history, to imagine a somewhat wider range of characters than you would find in actual history, Ms. Galley takes this opportunity to the level of absolute lunacy, apparently quite seriously. Let me demonstrate. In the presumed post-Civil-War period, a gang is carefully assembled to perform some secret and dangerous task. Two of them, the leader and the explosives expert, are homosexuals (who become lovers),... one white and one black.... The gunfighter is a woman,... who happens to be nine months pregnant.... The con artist is a fat white woman... who happens to be madly in love with the black marshal (and he with her)... who is chasing after them, and nobody ever has a thing to say about any of this.... Finally, one thing I haven't yet pointed out: the black homosexual explosives expert always refers to himself with plurals not singulars, without explanation,... and so does everyone else who knows him, again, without explanation,... and after everything else I cannot help but wonder, did author Gailey originally write this character as Siamese twins, like Chang and Eng, until somebody wrestled her laptop away from her? Compared to everything else she throws at readers it seems a perfectly reasonable assumption; compared to all that, having everyone riding around on hippos instead of horses seems absolutely normal. Now, if this was more of a comedy, I might not say a thing, but this is actually pretty grim and pretty violent. People are tortured and killed and eaten (or chewed up),... sometimes in large numbers, and none of this seems like enough of a joke to justify any of the weird characters. Fortunately, the second novella "Taste of Marrow" is a noticeable improvement on the first, "River of Teeth", in part because so many of the flat out weird characters have become more rounded.Too dang weird to completely accept, but Ms. Gailey's writing noticeably improves over time.

Hippo westerns: the alt history you didn’t know you needed. With a diverse set of characters woven together into a wonderful set of stories, they are easy to read, and create a fascinating world that is fully realised.Gender norms are challenged and there isn’t a western genre cliched that isn’t turned around to reveal a new facet.

A bloody mess and I loved it. The first novella is the best, I think, we meet some very unique characters in an extraordinaryplace. But the very, very best are the hippos.

I saw the premise to this book and my interest was immediately piqued. I love the world building in these books, but I wish there was even more world building and more hippo action. Story is good but I was left wanting more.

I thought this might be an entertainment. It wasn't. The characters were ridiculous, the plot (such as it was) was worse. I banished it from my Kindle.

What can I say? Well written, funny. It's a cowboy adventure for 21st sensibilities. I will definitely be on the lookout for more by this author.

I’ll be honest wasn’t sure I was going to like this book but Really loved reading about their adventures.

This has not influenced my review.*You know how some books constantly tell you how awful a character is, and said character constantly broods about how awful they are, but then the character never actually does anything awful?American Hippo is not that book.Within the first chapter, our protagonist, Winslow, slit a man's nostrils and put a knife through his eye without hesitation when the man insulted his hippo and then tried to attack him. So it was kind of self-defense, but you don't learn how to toss a knife in the air so that it lands perfectly in someone's eye without practice, and you don't do it all without hesitation unless you've done it before. Just sayin'.And all the other main characters? They were just as bad, if not worse. These characters, they were thieves, con artists, killers. They knew what their priorities were, they knew what kind of people they were, and they were unapologetic about it. And that was what made me enjoy reading about them, even if I didn't quite like all of them as people or didn't agree with some of their actions. I was shown the bad that was in them, I was shown the good, and I was allowed to make my own opinions or to simply read this story about them without worrying about good or bad. But the author did manage to make me really like and care about some of them anyway. In fact, I really want to read more about Winslow and Hero and am bummed that there won't be more books about them!Another great thing was how much diversity/inclusivity this book had. The main characters had different ethnicities, body types, sexual orientations, and genders. There weren't a lot of labels used, and I don't want to make assumptions, but I do know some had dark skin, one sometimes spoke in Spanish, one was fat, one used they/them pronouns, one was was genderfluid, the main character was either bi or pansexual, and multiple characters fit into more than one marginalized group. It also seemed to be a very accepting world they lived in (or maybe just a very accepting circle of friends).The overall stories (plural since this book was a combo of two connected novellas and some shorts) were enjoyable too. The book was not as sci-fi/fantasy as what I normal read---no paranormal creatures or space adventures, just an alternate history---but the Old West setting (which I love) and the hippos still transported me to another world and made the story fantastical in its own way.This book even had some romance! There was still plenty of hippos and explosions and fights, and there was nothing sexually explicit, but there was a definite romance threaded throughout. I liked it though. My only complaint about it is that it seemed sudden. I'm not sure how much time Winslow and Hero spent together, but we didn't get to see any of that time, so their feelings seemed really strong really fast. But they were cute together.I also enjoyed the writing. Something about it just pulled me in. I was a little confused by the POV though. Sometimes it seemed like 3rd person limited, but then it would switch without warning like it was omniscient. Not that big of an issue though since it didn't happen that often.Overall, I was easily drawn into this book, I loved the diverse and morally grey characters, and I really enjoyed reading about this hippo-filled Old West!Rating: 4 StarsOriginal Review @ Metaphors and Moonlight (link in profile)

Soon it will spread and affect even those of the Moon Clan. Have you not all seen the stories within the tree rings? We must decide at which pointwe choose to disengage and retreat into the Mists, and leave the humans to themselves." The flames around his form lurched as Leori voiced his opinion. Golden threads of fiery light twist and wound their way through his hair that was more like a mane. This Faery elder had seen enough. "Leori, do wereally do them a service by deserting them at this crucial time within the Ages?" Seamone wondered aloud. A watery milieu of wave forms moved around her body. Indigo and blue hues gave way to sea foam green rays. She waved her hands through these colors sporadically helping the emotions to flow and not settle. The slamming of Leori's staff shook the ground, and was followed by a curt retort: "Do we not do them a great disservice by forcing their hand when there exists so little willingness? Darkness has all but consumed their hearts and clouded their minds!"A wind blew from everywhere and nowhere. Vayu was deeply conflicted by the issue. He knew the council had to come to some form of agreement. There greatest strength was inunity. Logic and reason were the gifts of this faery elder of the Air Clan. He moved for clarification, "Is it not now, more than ever, so important that we try to strengthen our alliance? If we continue to stand together perhaps all will not be lost during the Age of Sleep..." Elysinia spoke now, her tone loving but firm, "Leori is correct in his conjecture that no good ever comes by forcing one's will upon another, even if the cause be noble. However there are still those who wish to work side by side. Until the day comes when this is not so, I believe we must continue to work together with the humans." Visible through the skylight was the starlit sky. The opening rested in the high earthen ceiling above, and was the only connection to the surface in this dome-like subterranean cave. Elysinia's golden hair gleamed in the starlight. The glow ofher skin shone through her silken garment of silver and violet. She turned toVayu, acknowledging that she'd heard him as well: "It is also rightto understand the importance of our partnership with the humans.  Do not forget that our destiny is deeply intertwined with theirs. Although we have grown along different paths we are still connected through our Earthly home, as well as..." before Elysinia could finish her point Rael appeared from the tunnels.A Faery page who was Elysinia's right hand in every way, Rael approached respectfully:"Elysinia, forgive my intrusion, but you must come to the East Mound Entrance at once. There is something you are going to want to see."Elysinia looked over at the others. The others nodded their understanding. They were a long way away from mutual agreement, but with more time perhaps... "We shall adjourn the meeting for now. Let us resume the discussion again at the First Quarter Moon." Elysinia excused herself from the room that held the large Round Table. Gliding swiftly down the long corridor that led to the outskirts of the kingdom, she knew full well that Rael would not have considered interrupting if something weren't of the utmost importance. Tall and sparkling was this being, just like all of the Faery Ones. His eyes, a bluish grey with specks of gold, while deeply hypnotic were often cool and distant. Royal blue attire always graced his form, and his demeanor was noble and true. Rael had been working with Elysinia for over 3,000 years. The crystals held him in fascination, and  nothing brought him greater joy.The corridor came to an end offering a myriad of directions in which to proceed. Twists and turns were prevalent and one who did not know these underground tunnels well would consider themselves to be forever lost within a maze of a thousand choices. The tunnels connected to the innermost rooms and were necessary to guard the most precious and sacred treasures. They did nottarry; Rael and Elysinia took no thought as they made their way around the curling passageways, further and further out of the Earth toward the surface they traveled.  Rael offered no information. Either he had none to give, or he thought better to allow the situation to speak for itself, Elysinia did not know. As they approached the East Mound Entrance, a tiny shriek filled the air. Elysinia's attention was suddenly drawn to a shadowy and pallid form. Held and sheltered within the folds of a mysterious hooded woman's long dark cape, a tiny infant cried out.The woman struggled to maintain her footing, and a faery scout standing nearby moved quickly offering himself as a brace to steady her. Holding the baby with her one arm, the debilitated woman reached out for Elysinia with the other.Visibly unwell, she attempted to mutter an explanation, "You are She Who Records Time, yes..."the woman managed."Yes, I am Elysinia. What brings you here to our borders in such dire straits?""You and I are more familiar than you know, although my condition makes me nearly unrecognizable to you or anyone of your kind or another. We have hidden among the shadows for some time. There is no time for explanation, though, for mytime is not long now."The sickly and feeble woman looked at the baby, "Please. You must help me. Help him. He is the last.""The last...?"Elysinia was confused momentarily. Just as the realization began to dawn the woman spoke again, "Yes, My Lady. He is the last of the Dragon Clan." As those last words fell from her lips her form began to dissolve. Dispersed as if by wind, she grew ethereal, and flickered in and out of existence.  Understanding the gravity of the situation, the Faery elder uttered, "Wait! What House is he of? How will I properly train him? I must know from which one of the four Houses he hails!"  Coming from all directions, an echo was heard on the wind as it whispered through the trees,"He was born with the Silver Scale." Embedded in the center of the baby's tiny wrist was a tiny silver dragon scale. It gleamed inthe light of the moon that hung low and full this night. The mark of the Silver Prince, thought Elysinia. The baby floated in midair. Then by some unseen force, he gently arrived in Elysinia's arms. In the place where the woman had stood, a swirling silver white mist filled the air, and something materialized there. Only a few seemed to notice. Rael and Elysinia looked at one another. The baby who had been crying incessantly suddenly became silent, and a tiny sound like a giggle arose from his lips. A glimpse of what appeared to be the silhouette of a Silver Dragon flashed before their eyes. And just as soon as it had emerged, it was gone, as if it were never even there.

The Forest Speaks 2 is as intriguing as the First book. I couldn't put either of them down and can't wait for the next one. I wish the books were made into movies. The stories got me thinking about my own life, my soul's purpose, and how everything is connected, people, animals, and plants. I felt inspired to allow my inner guidance to lead me. I now take time to try new things that I feel compelled to do such as painting and drawing. If you are looking for a book to inspire you, then I definitely would recommend this book.

The Forest Speaks Series of books are an excellent way to help one gain insight into the Faery Realms. I believe Diomira is a genuine link to remembering these worlds. I love her style of writing, the way she uses the short chapters, and the movement between the timelines. This seems to help to enable being absorbed into the story, and to leave the so called "real" world. It feels so natural that one begins to blend into a vesica pisces state of mind. One evening as I recollected Diomira's work, I had a distinct deja-vu feeling of the Faery Realms, and I felt that I was seeing her story in the Hall of Records. I experienced a beautiful energy welling up from within that I had not felt before. As I witnessed this, I tried to check it with my rational mind, but the energy continued to arise. Book 2 - Through the Eyes of the Dragon takes us even deeper into the journey of the mystical. I loved this book as much as the first one. I can't wait for the next one. I was SO excited to get started with some new recipes for my IP that also include WW freestyle points. I got more and more concerned as I turned the pages, and finally came back to the Amazon page to figure out WTF was going on! I don't buy things with poor reviews - but now that I'm back here seeing the latest reviews, clearly everyone had the same experience as me reading the book. So were there a bunch of earlier fake positive reviews that were somehow since removed?!! Maybe when I bought it there just weren't ANY reviews yet and I was feeling hopeful? That's best case scenario. I wanted to believe this is a nice person who meant well with her book, but now I feel like I've been defrauded and that's very upsetting. Oh - and since I didn't actually say yet what's so wrong, the big thing is this: the points values are completely, dead WRONG. I personally just ran a few through the Weight Watchers recipe builder. (See photo - this is NOT 6 points!!!). It's a total let down and this book is basically heading to the trash bin. **edited to add, I've found another book with 70 near-perfect reviews. It has the EXACT same cover and table of contents, just a different author. This is definitely shady and I've reported it to Amazon.

This is a magazine and not a book. The first 27 pages go over the history of the freestyle program and weight watchers. There are no pictures inside of this book. To me it is a complete disappointment. I could easily go on Pinterest and find all these recipes in 20 minutes

Some good recipes but the Smart Points values are all off! I put a few of the recipes into the recipe builder on my WW app and not one of them came up with the Smart Points values listed in this cookbook. And some of the information regarding the WW Freestyle program is downright false. I work for WW as a guide ( formerly know as a receptionist) and there are many things written about the program are not what we tell members. I will probably try some of the recipes but I would not recommend this cookbook if you are a WW member.

This book has numerous spelling and grammar errors including a recipe that calls for “gender nights” as an ingredient. Additionally, it touts 150 recipes but the recipe for Mashed Cauliflower appears twice in two different sections of the book. I feel like I paid my hard earned money for somebody else’s perfunctory craft project.

This book is very misleading. The one I received doesn’t look anything like the one pictured. The points for the recipes are completely off and there is not 1 picture of any recipe. Very disappointed in this purchase considering the number of positive reviews it received.

Confusing - some recipes in heading have one cook time but recipe step lists a different one. Pot roast says cook 8 hrs but recipe says 70 min. Beef pho calls for “thumb size gender nights” but these are not in recipe steps and no idea what they are?? Seems not well proofed. I will try some recipes as some recipes look tasty but seems hastily put togetherness.

Though these recipes are simple, there’s way more egg recipes than one human would ever need. The recipes that do not revolve around eggs have ingredients that will be very difficult to find in a suburban grocery store.

About the Author

Anne Green Gilbert founded the Creative Dance Center and Kaleidoscope Dance Company in Seattle, Washington, in 1981 and the Summer Dance Institute for Teachers in 1994. Anne has had a varied teaching career. She started as an elementary school teacher, moved on to dance and pedagogy classes at the University of Illinois at Chicago and University of Washington, then taught children’s dance classes at Cornish College and Bill Evans/Dance Theatre Seattle. She has been an adjunct professor at Seattle Pacific University for many years and taught for Lesley University’s Outreach master’s program for 10 years. For the past three decades, Anne has taught toddlers through adults at Creative Dance Center, trained teachers through her Summer Dance Institute, and conducted hundreds of workshops and residencies across the United States and abroad. Anne developed the BrainDance, a focusing warm-up exercise, in 2000. The BrainDance is used in many schools, studios, and homes around the world. Anne is internationally recognized for her work with young artists and her creative process. She has choreographed dances for university dance companies as well as Northwest dance companies and Kaleidoscope. Anne is the author of Teaching the Three Rs Through Movement, Creative Dance for All Ages, Brain-Compatible Dance Education, Teaching Creative Dance (DVD), and BrainDance (DVD), and numerous articles. She is an active member of the National Dance Association, National Dance Education Organization, and Dance and the Child International (daCi). Anne served on the daCi board for 12 years. She is founder and past president of the Dance Educators Association of Washington, an organization promoting quality dance education in all Washington State K-12 schools. As a member of the Arts Education Standards project, she helped write the Washington State Dance Standards and Learning Goals. Anne is the recipient of several awards, including the NDA Scholar/Artist award in 2005, the National Dance Education Organization Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, and the Lawrence Tenney Stevens American Dance Award for her work with boys and men in dance in 2014. Anne is the mother of three Kaleidoscope alums and grandmother of seven dancing grandchildren. She lives in Seattle with her husband.

I have been teaching preschool dance in studios for over 20 years. I have never found such a helpful comprehensive book/curriculum tailored for the young dancers. There are tips for behavioral problems, excellent music and prop ideas, and even detailed lesson plans. My very favorite point that the author makes- something that I have said for years and years- is that the most important skill to be a successful dance teacher is a positive sunny attitude. This is an excellent resource for new and experienced teachers

My granddaughter is taking contemporary dance, and the dance moves she is learning are outlined clearly in the book. It is a good reference for her, and for me to help her with what she's supposed to learn.

Having lived in Japan for almost two decades now, I got this book to learn more about the primary "religion" of my host country.I like the author's objective approach, and how he was able to establish the difference between existential and essential Shintoism, by exploring and analyzing how they evolved throughout the history of this nation.I would recommend this book to anybody interested in Japan and the Japanese people. I would also recommend this book to anybody interested in religion and spirituality.I rated it five stars because it gave me a better understanding of the way the Japanese people think and behave through the "religion" that has been part and parcel of their culture and their history.

It seemed to me that the author was writing as a scholar not a knowledgable practiciner.

More than just a primer on Shintoism, Kasulis has authored an intelligent and indispensible book on understanding Japan and the Japanese. My neck muscles were getting tired from the constant nodding with assent at the many revelations (Ah! Naruhodo!) Few philosophers have been quite this successful in making the apparently mystical appear quite comprehensible.The key point is that Kasulis successfuly explains the everyday joys of Shinto (which is what practioners actually relate to) rather than bogging down in doctrine that few Japanese are actually concerned with. A doctrinal approach to Shinto this is NOT, so if your goal is to know Susanoo no mikoto from Amaterasu Ômikami, then this may not be your best book on the topic. But to UNDERSTAND Shinto, you can do no better.

I found this book to be mildly disappointing. If you are looking for a general, historical overview of the development of Japanese religion (without much central focus on Shinto), this book would be for you. The author manages to submerge the actual discussion of the Shinto religion into a background of the historical development of its relationship to Buddhism and Confucianism. This history is important, but for those looking for direct detailed information about Shinto beliefs, rituals, kami, (in short, Shinto itself) I would look elsewhere. Some important historical context is learned from this book, but it does not succeed much in portraying a vivid descriptive account of the Shinto faith. Kasulis' theory of the "existential vs. essentialist" approach of religion I found wholly uninteresting; either he is defining terms too finely or choosing the wrong terms to label them. I could recommend this book only of background historical, contextual importance only,

A coworker of mine asked me the other day if I had read Jon Gordon's The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy. I had never heard of it. Turns out my local public library has the audio book, so on his recommendation, I decided to check it out.Gordon tells the story of a businessman whose career is on the ropes. His marriage is unhappy, and he has run out of fixes. His car is out of commission for a couple weeks, so he has to take the bus to work. The bus driver, Joy, recognizes his despair and, along with the other passengers, introduces him to their 10 rules.Gordon's main point is that we should have a positive attitude and convey that to the people around us. Managers set the tone for people who work under them, and should insist that no one stay "on the bus" if they won't buy into the positivity. As Gordon tells the story, the reluctant bus rider implements changes at his workplace with outstanding results.The Energy Bus is an overly simplistic business fable, just as you would expect from this sort of book. But the broad points are important and are presented clearly and effectively. Attitude is so important, and the tone set by a manager or director is inevitably passed to the team. "Energy vampires" impact team productivity and unity. Gordon is so positive and encouraging it's contagious. The Energy Bus can give you a boost as you think about being more positive at work, working with more purpose and enjoyment, and passing those attitudes along to your coworkers.

During the two weeks he learns the 10 rules of the bus;1 - You're the driver of your bus.2 - Desire, vision, and focus move your bus in the right direction.3 - Fuel your ride with positive energy.4 - Invite people on your bus and share your vision for the road ahead.5 - Don't waste energy on those who don't get on your bus.6 - Post a sign that says, "no energy vampires allowed" on your bus.7 - Enthusiasm attracts more passengers and energizes them during the ride.8 - Love your passengers.9 - Drive with purpose.10 - Have fun and enjoy the ride.The book is about mindset and bringing positive energy. All I can say is WOW! I've was just dealing with a family member negative vampire one day before reading this book. A friend at Church said your family member has negative energy. I had been on the ropes for years on how to handle this vampire and also I did not recognize he was being a negative energy vampire, until I got a double sign confirmation from my friend at Church, but still it was this book that enlightened me and truly showed me how all these years I have been doing well but every time the vampire comes around it was draining, and I was feeding into it. No more Thank God to the signs and confirmation of this book. Because of this book I am able now to understand the power of The Energy Bus. Please read it and share with as many as you truly care about. Its a Life Changer and we only have one Life, so why spend it on negativity when we can all be so Positive and in enjoyment on our Journey! Be Blessed not stressed. Every time I had a negative experience I fueled it not knowing I was only destroying myself and all those around. Because of this book I now know how to handle those negative vampires and negative experiences. in order to not let them in my life, but yet Feed my positive. Love you all!

I would give this book a 5 star review but (not trying to be negative just real), while the ideas are spot on, the story is pretty simple and corny. The message is really something life changing that I wish everyone could hear, but the story is so golly jee whiz that even I was rolling my eyes at times. And I'm Miss positive!
