I had one of these maps for a previous trip to Oslo, and found that it was the only map I needed or used for my particular tourist purposes. I love the way they're organized (with their unique fold-in design). Now that I'm going to Oslo again I got the update, which means I can pass on my previous copy to my traveling partner! This is the best walking-around map for orienting a person who is staying in Oslo and going to some of the highlights, the ship museums and the Vigelund sculpture park among others. This time I'm taking the train from the airport into Oslo and this map contains useful information to help me with that adventure as well. It's a very useful, colorful, easy to understand map of a limited-focus area and an excellent value for the money.

Great map. It's very convenient to have this map, even with Google Maps, as phones can act funny, and it shows important places so you can plan your day out without even taking out your phone or laptop. Also, if the phone dies, it is great to have a backup for safety. Especially in Norway where you'll be hiking and walking all day to see all the beauty.It folds up to a tiny little space but really offers quite a large map of the city that any tourist could appreciate. Definitely 5 stars as I used it a lot, and then a friend came into town who took it from me and used it almost exclusively to get around. Nowadays it's great to have something like this so you can leave your phone in your pocket and enjoy life.

Good map, has most streets you need. Nice size. Did rip when wet. Better transportation map (larger, easier to read) available at the visitors center for free, but I used this map a lot to get around by foot during my 4 days in Oslo.

Nice compact map (5 maps actually) of Oslo that folds to the same size as a passport cover. Tiny writing required wearing readers for my aging eyes but all the major attractions are covered. Our hotel had a free map of the city but this was nice to have and easier to manage because of its size.

It was the right size for my purse and helped me get around. What more can you want?

These are great little maps to have when visiting unfamiliar cities so you don't have to always use your phone data to navigate your way.

After a week in Oslo, I love this map. It had the needed information and was in a really easy to use format. It fits easily in a back pocket and doesn't require sloppy folding or fiddling. This is th one to use.

This is a great little map for any tourist, but it could use a some local train information (like a London tube overview) because the Oslo train lines are often much more direct and useful for accessing most of this wonderful city's main attractions.

Really enjoyed this beautiful book and will continue to enjoy for years to come. I have been a big fan of Ms. Roehm'sfor many years but sometimes found that she focused too many books on her love for flowers. This was a delightfulchange of pace and, for me, answered a lot of questions about her earlier life. My only disappointment was that shedid not include more pictures of her home in Paris during the difficult years after her divorce as given the few I have seen it was a stunning residence. She is unquestionably multi talented in so many areas (clothing designer, gardening,interior design, photographer, hostess and taste maker) all driven by her high energy to achieve the best and with theeye of an accomplished artist. She is her own demanding task master but reading between the lines it sounds like she is now willing to take life a little slower since her health scare and hopefully "live in the moment". I hope that she will continue to entertain us all with the ongoing sharing of her interests and her own most beautiful photography. I thinkpart of her appeal has always been that while she is woman that "has it all" she has retained that basic Midwesternsense of kindness, decency and values which makes many of her readers feel a connection to her as a person despitethe lavish lifestyle she is clearly able to afford. Given our shared love of dogs I would love to see a small book onher pups in residence in her many home and a book on just on just how she celebrates Christmas. In the meantime,I'm going to pick up Design & Style: A Constant Thread of the umpteenth time and enjoy it as much as I did the firsttime I opened it. I can't say this is Ms. Roehm's most fabulous book--they're all fabulous. I can say WOW! Every page is a feast for the eyes, and every photo is so beautiful. I just wish that Ms. Roehm was still designing clothing. I bought so much from her designer line, and I still wear and cherish many items. Elegant and classic is always the best--her clothing, her gardens, and her houses are beautiful examples.

This was a disappointing purchase for me especially given the purchase price. I have several of her other books and have enjoyed them. This one seemed to be a vanity piece for Ms Roehm. Too many pictures of herself and old “triumphs.” Save your money on this one.

Carolyne Roehm has written another feast for the eyes. I loved it. Interesting account of her early years and am just sad she is not still designing clothes. They were gorgeous! Fantastic coffee table book!

This book is beautiful, sumptuous, and elegant. But, more importantly, it’s interesting. Ms. Roehm’s personal stories and career paths are captivating. The way in which she explains her creative process and evolution is educational, expansive and inspiring.

This book delivers what is promised. It really is a 'Carolyn' show and appropriately so. Beautiful photos and interestingchapters of a most fruitful life. Brilliantly color filled and ideas for decor and enthusiastic love of flowers.

I was between voting 3 and 4 stars on this and have chosen 4 because it's still useful regardless of its faults. We spent over a month all over southern Malawi and consulted this regularly. The problem is that the phone numbers are out of date and some of the info is inaccurate but that's not the fault of the author since the area keeps changing so often.If you're going to Malawi you should definitely get these guides but make sure you purchase the newest version to get the most accurate info you can get. This is already outdated.While the info can be outdated, phone numbers incorrect, business hours incorrect, etc. The maps and suggestions are invaluable. I'd suggest getting ideas from this and then doing research in the area to make sure the hours or phone numbers are right. In other words, don't completely trust the business hours, phone numbers, or addresses but definitely trust this as a source of suggestions for attractions as well as travel tips. The businesses there change so often that you can't blame a book for inaccurate addresses, hours and numbers. While we were there in the course of a month two businesses moved locations, four changed hours, and many had canceled their phones or changed their numbers.

I lived in Blantyre for three months and relied heavily on this book. It has a wealth of information on day and week-long excursions, restaurants, city highlights, transportation, and even health concerns. Yes, many phone numbers are out of date, but you'll find that Malawians change their phone numbers pretty often, so it's not the book's fault. I admired the writer's tone and condensed writing style.Lastly, if you're looking at this page, you're probably planning a trip to Malawi. It's a welcoming, gorgeous, transformative place. Eat all the avocados and mandazi balls you can find!!

Our family actually has two of these. One resides in Malawi with a family member living there. He uses it constantly and it is an invaluable resource for the traveling ex-pat. We bought a second one to prepare for and take with us on a visit this year. We, too, used it constantly, and made continual use of the directions and recommendations. I think our journey would have been much less successful without it. We did not find anything that was out of date or inconsistent with the local reality, which is extremely important when traveling in a country with limited resources and infrastructure.We also loved the sections on history, culture, and wildlife. These are a real plus in this book. Our trip was somewhat off the beaten path and we learned an enormous amount about what we were seeing and doing from this book. I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about a trip to Malawi.One additional feature is the online updates available at the Bradt website. We found these equally helpful and good companion material for the book.

Malawi is a small country by African standards, and has no high-profile star attractions.Few tourists visit more places than some beach resorts along the shores of its huge lake.Considering the above, the wealth of info on potential destinations included in this book is stunning.Not only is pretty much every sizeable town described, so are plenty of rural areas, notably obscure forest reserves, marshes and small lakes.The info on the country's wildlife and national parks is truly in-depth and very interesting. So is the background information on culture and history. Very good list of bokks recommended for further reading at the back.Also, all the practical details (with prices) on accommodation and transport options you might find in better-known series like Lonely Planet (which no longer publishes a separate Malawi guide).In fact, the only disadvantage of this book might just be that with all the recommendations, it might make you spend much longer in Malawi than you had originally planned! ;-)

About the Author

David Macaulay received his bachelor of architecture degree from Rhode Island School of Design. In January 1973, Macaulay went to France to work on the first of his twenty-five books, Cathedral. He then constructed a colonial Roman town (City, 1974), erected monuments to the Pharaohs (Pyramid, 1975), dissected the maze of subterranean systems below and essential to every major city (Underground, 1976), built a medieval fortress (Castle, 1977), and dismantled the Empire State Building (Unbuilding, 1980). Macaulay is perhaps best known for The Way Things Work (1988). It was followed by Black and White (1990) for which he won the 1991 Caldecott Medal. A revised edition of The Way Things Work was published in 1998 followed by Building Big, Mosque, and most recently, The Way We Work (2008).

We had a great time with this book. The illustrations and text work well together to explain the workings of the toilet, where our waste goes, and what happens to it. Bonus points for the disembodied digestive system! Our little guy found it a little odd, I found it hilarious.

A great book for curious kiddos. A little boy I nanny for has been obsessed with sewers lately (mainly due to some neighborhood kids telling him about Pennywise), so I ordered this book to read with him. The explanations were detailed, yet not overly complex, and the illustrations were informative and cute. My husband was actually jealous and would like a copy of this book for himself. I highly recommend this book for preschool and grade school age children and I will be ordering another copy for my own collection.

Used this to help my students with note taking and recognition of NF text features with the added benefit of being high interest.

I bought this book on a whim for my 4 year old who is obsessed with how and why. We have read it every single night since and he can recite it from memory. He loves knowing how a toilet works, why it is shaped the way it is, and knowing what happens to waste after you flush. We drive by a waste water treatment plant and he starts calling out the names of the visible portions and what they do,\.

A great book but I found THE Classroom Management Book (by the same author) more helpful than this one. The First Days of School sets the stage for the strategy of procedures in the classroom. THE Classroom Management Book fast-forwards through theory and shows real-life procedures that you can actually use. If you already have a good grasp of teaching philosophies or you've been teaching for more than a year, you can probably skip this one and go straight to the sequel.

I had always heard that this book was useful & was like the educator's bible, but when it arrived I wasn't sure if I would agree (it looks like an outdated book!). After reading the required chapters for class, I realized how true it was that this book was an educator's goldmine to pertinent information to make the first day of school go smoothly. I highly encourage young teachers to purchase this book & read it, & keep it in your library for years to come! There is so much useful information in here that I doubt many people would disagree with Wong's ideas!

One of the books in my teaching canon. Great for new teachers. Go slow to go fast! Spending time putting in routines, rituals, and expectations in the beginning of the year saves all kinds of teaching time and sorrow later in the year.

This is a great book for teaching at elementary level with innocent minds. Also, there are many good organizational tips. However, when teaching Algebra II to public high school students in a socially dysfunctional area where student respect for even society at large is in trouble, then this book fails to provide the character building plans to save such students.

This is great tool to help you get the year started off right! I read this book this summer before taking the online courses offered through Utah State University's STEDI program. I'm working as a substitute teacher and started the year off in a long term assignment, so this was a huge help in soothing my beginning of the year jitters and answering questions that I knew the answer to but offered reassurances. I find myself going back to it sometimes for new ideas and encouragement. It's great for the first time teacher just as much as for the seasoned teacher!

As an education student this book is a required reading for one of our classes. After going through the book I have to honestly say this book should have been required a lot earlier in the program as I have found the information in this book to be more helpful than any of the other books that we were required to read.The information by Harry K. Wong in this book is an absolute must for any new, or experienced, teacher. The book is not full of technical jargon, as many books on education are, and is written in a simple format that makes it an easy read. And to complete the entire package there is a website that goes along with the book that expands on much of the information in the book making it an even more invaluable resource.Harry K. Wong is my Educational Hero.

Pretty easy read consider it was a textbook.Good information, but too much of telling you what you need to achieve, without enough information on how to achieve it.Lot of good stories, but not enough in-depth information on how to create good "classroom management".

This is one of the most amazing books on teaching practices I have ever read! I love how it starts out with a warning that it's not a book for those who see teaching as a "job" but for those who see it an opportunity to change lives. There are so many great, practical ideas that I am already using - and LOVING the results! If you are a teacher, studying to be a teacher, or love a teacher you must read this book.A bonus for me was I got a used copy that someone had put notes in the margins with some additional ideas to add to the book - love it! It's like an exchange of great ideas. I know my students' educational experiences will be so much better because I have read (and am totally keeping for reference) this book!

The thing about Chalene Johnson is that you either love her or you just don't get her at all. I happen to love her, which is probably a good thing for a reviewer of this book. Are there earth shattering revelations in this book? Nope, nothing that hasn't been said often and possibly better by other writers on goal setting, time management, fitness and motivation. It's just that Chalene puts her own twist on each segment.I've listened to all of Chalene's podcasts at least once, follow her on all her social media platforms and have taken her free on-line courses. As she repurposes all of her material, it's hard for me to gauge how impactful this book might have been when it first came out.This is a fun, easy read. As a personal development junkie, I still found some of Chalene's suggestions actually enhance advice I've received from other writers in the genre.

I'm sure there are other books out there like this one, and I'm sure that Chalene's style would annoy some people (my husband, for instance; he doesn't appreciate rabbit trails, and although she doesn't take many of them, her ADD really does show up now and then in the book), I really enjoyed the book.However, there is a difference between enjoying a book and letting it impact your life. If you want it to do the latter, my recommendation is that you find a friend to read it with you. Read a chapter a day, and then share your homework with your friend. Not only will you really bond in the 30 days it takes to get through it, but the accountability of knowing someone is expecting to see your work and not wanting to let them down will challenge you to actually do it.I did it. I went through all 30 days. And I have changed so much! I am much more productive, and I am well on my way to accomplishing certain goals that in the past were just dreams. I really like the new chapter in this book, too (I started reading it before this book came out and got the updated version later).Could you get these ideas from other sources? Probably. But I liked this one, and I have not only recommended it to friends, but I even bought one for my SIL!

I've been a huge fan of Chalene's since she came onto the scene around 2006 with the Turbo Jam workouts. I received this book for Christmas the year it came out. Although I enjoyed it then, I only half-heartedly went through day by day and completed each task. At that time, I was more interested in the chapters regarding fitness and nutrition. But recently, I pulled this book off my bookshelf and decided to actually DO IT this time, step by step, day by day. Today I'm a couple weeks in and am really enjoying it! Chalene does a great job of breaking everything down in a way that anyone can follow it and understand the content. It really is so much more than just a diet and fitness book--it can help you organize your life and get into the right mindset to reach your goals. I know for me personally, it really made me think about my priorities. When I feel like flopping down on the couch to binge watch reality TV, I now stop to think, "is this the most productive thing I could be doing right now? Am I making the most out of my time?" It has really put things into perspective.There's been a lot of people stating that they think this is just a book written by Chalene to brag about herself, and while hearing about her successes can tend to make one feel that their life is "subpar," I think you just have to look at it as her providing inspiration. She talks about struggles too which makes it more real. I didn't find it "braggy" at all, I was actually grateful for her personal stories because they were examples of whatever the topic was for that day. Like sometimes she'd be going on about something that didn't quite make sense to me, then she'd throw in her personal experience and then the light bulb would come on and I would understand it better.As far as others not liking the photos throughout the book, I liked them. While obviously the important content of the book is the words, the photos are nice to look at. As a woman who turned 40 this year, I look at those photos of Chalene and feel inspired. I mean, the woman is going on 50 and she looks incredible. I look at her and think to myself that turning 40 doesn't mean giving up and trading cute clothes in for frumpy old lady clothes. Chalene is proof that age doesn't matter--it's how you take care of yourself, not how many birthdays you've had. And hello, she's got a beautiful family--I'd want to show them off too if I were her. Go easy on her, people.I actually love this book so much that I got the Audible version of it too. Now I can listen to it when I'm getting ready for work in the morning, in the shower or going to bed at night. I just turn it on when I go to bed and let it play. It helps me fall asleep and I can't help but hope that hearing it read to me while I sleep will somehow subconsciously ingrain the content into my head :)If you are a fan of Chalene's workouts, give this book a try. If you want to get your life organized but aren't sure where to start, give this book a try. If you want to start a fitness journey but aren't sure where to start, give this book a try. Chalene is awesome and this book will help you if you let it :)

I was excited to read this book after reading reviews, but ended up disappointed. I felt the author took "The Color Purple" and revised it- the main character even does a lot of reference to TCP's characters. I did love the style, and I felt it was a raw, uninhibited look into a culture few see or care to see. Having worked with and been involved with this culture, I was not shocked or surprised.This is one time I enjoyed a movie over a book.Unfortunately, there are no positive male role models in this book. Perhaps because it is reflective of real life; this saddened me. While the education system does what it can, and what it is taught to do, and the welfare system does the same, we see how both systems fail miserably by no fault of its own - history and an overloaded, underpaid system has seen to that. Thus the theme of the book.

I come back to this book again and again. The action plan. The calendar. The goal creating. Ive moved onto the new Smart Journal and am excited to get the newly released version of this book. This on has been passed to friends and come back dog-eared. Safe to say...everyone has gained something from it!

I am not thrilled with this Bible. It is NKJV and not an Orthodox translation. The only saving features are some of the study materials, although not all footnotes seem truly Orthodox. This seems more like a Protestant take on Orthodoxy. Some of the added essays are helpful and it is red letter for the words of Christ. But it has an annoying three-column format.Unfortunately, there are not many options for Orthodox Christians when it comes to Bible translations. There really needs to be an organized effort by the Orthodox Churches in America and other English speaking countries to produce an English translation that is truly Orthodox. [I also purchased the Orthodox New Testament (both volumes) put out by the Holy Apostles Convent/Dormition Skete, which purports to be an Orthodox translation. But I haven't used that one enough to comment yet, except to say that one has a nice large font size and so is easy on the eyes.]

The New Kings James Translation is a fine text, attempting to preserve some of the familiarity and beauty of the original King James, but also striving to increase our understanding of the text . . .But this Bible is primarily of interest because it brings the Orthodox understanding of scripture into such full accord . . . With a full introduction outlining the Orthdox view of scripture, additional articles and notes, this text helps to illuminate the Orthodox mind and perspective, as well as provide insight into the liturgy, sacraments and theology of the Orthodox Church.

The very best New Testament for the Orthodox believer. The print is easy to read. There are beautiful icon illustrations throughout. There are a multitude of Illuminating notes and explanations on the meaning of passages that are not always self-evident. In short, I absolutely LOVE this New Testament Bible. I am sorry that is currently out of print, and I hope the publisher decides to reprint it at some point. Even though there is now a complete Old and New Testament (which I also have and recommend), I spend much more time reading only the New Testament and so this volume is easier to hold and manage.

The perfect Study Bible for anyone practicing the Eastern Orthodox faith, a catechumen, or anyone interested in learning about this fascinating ancient, and uncorrupted version of the earliest Christian faith. The study notes, icon reproductions, maps and the section containing morning and evening Orthodox prayers makes this a must-have Bible for any Orthodox Christian who wants to delve deeper into his/her faith, as interpreted by the early Church fathers and mothers.

This happens to be the first English study Bible that offers study aids written from the Orthodox perspective. As a Christian-unity minded Protestant I appreciate all the special features of this study-Bible that makes it so Orthodox.The study Bible starts with a section on The Bible and the Orthodox Church: The Church Fathers Speak, The Bible and Orthodox Tradition, The Creed and, Some Orthodox Beliefs and Their Biblical Foundation (which deals with topics such as Communion, honoring Mary, place of tradition vs Scripture, icons, saints, and liturgy). The second section of the introduction is basically A Guide to the Spiritual Life: Beginning the Journey to the Kingdom, How to Remain in Communion With God, Spritual Helps in the Examination of Your Conscience, Where to turn in the Psalms, and Where to turn in the New Testament (general subject indexes). There is also a short introduction on How to Use The Orthodox Study Bible and notes on the style and text of the NKJV.Each New Testament book is preceded by study notes on the Author, Date, Major Theme, Background Information, and an Outline. Gospel passages and sub-titles are shown with their equivalent texts in the other Gospels. Each text has carefully prepared study notes with easy to follow highlighted words. Keeping in line with Orthodox Christian living, this study Bible has a chart of Scripture reading to offer guidance for daily devotions, a guide for morning and evening prayers, and readings for feast days. Keeping in line with NKJV tradition, this study Bible has the words of Christ in red, and also center-columns cross references and translation notes. The end of this study Bible has lots of extras: a glossary of Orthodox Christian terminology, an index to annotations, a treatise on Interpreting the Scriptures, a harmony of the Gospels chart, Monies-Weighs-and-Mesures table, a Concordance, and Color Maps. A final addition that makes this study Bible distinctively eastern-Orthodox is the presence of various iconic images placed throughtout the text and related to a specific passage.I would recommend this study-Bible to any cradle-Orthodox who has never read the Holy Scriptures and who wants to live more like Jesus Christ and follow the example of the Christians of the Early Church.This study-Bible is also useful to anyone else (like Protestants, Catholics) who wants to learn more about the Eastern Orthodox Church and Christian traditions in this branch of Christianity.As an evangelical Protestant, I am using this guide as a more comprehensive view of textual hermeneutics and ecclesiology, a correct view of Christology, and a deeper spritual devotional.Interstingly enough, this paperback edition is 25% more than the hardcover edition.
