I first read Lopez captivating narrative of the North American grey wolve in the early 80's and have always had it in mind when thinking about the future of humanity.Yes, I know, it is a waste of time since there is very little I csn do to improve our species chances of survival, but somehow I just can not help it.But, you say, the book is about wolves. Well, yes and no, I think Mr Lopez had us in mind all along.The story of the relationship between Canis Lupus and Homo Sapiens can easily be classified as a tragedy, with the element of fate present on the almost extermination of the animals.This book shows the bad side of Sapiens in glorious technicolor, the wolves genocide done in a sea of ignorance and hatred, etc.I must be a bleeding heart liberal, you say. Well,no I am not, but my political views, whatever they may be, do not blind me to the fact that we tend to eliminate anything in out path, starting with our cousins the Neanderthals 40000 years ago up to hunder of species a year since we became "modern"If you want to learn about us, if you admire resilience and intelligence, read this book, you will be changed for the better.

I read this when it first came out, I've read it a couple of times since, and I just re-bought the Kindle edition for an upcoming trip. If Barry Lopez writes it - buy it. This is one of his best, but pretty much anything he does is more than worth having - and re-reading.

Lopez is an incredibly gifted nature writer and this was the first book I had the opportunity to read from him in an american literature class in college! He is so skilled at weaving in fact and his own insights about the wolves he lived around and studied to paint a three dimensional picture of the lives of wolves. They are not just predators, and they're not like dogs, they are their own creature filled with the mysteries of their own little societies. They love and fight and hunt, it's amazing to see these animals through his eyes. When I got to meet Lopez I was impressed by how non-chalant he is about the incredible experiences he has had. His views on his own writing are that he just writes down his thoughts and it makes him a great person to be around, and to read his works. His words are awe inspiring and completely able to transport you to the desolate landscapes he is so fond of, and to fall in love with them the way he has.

After reading "Never Cry Wolf" by Farley Mowat I've been in love with wolves. They have a society much like ours. They have a family structure, they look after older wolves who are no longer able to hunt. They respect and avoid territory inhabited by other wolf packs...a great read for those curious about wolves.

This is such a great book I have purchased more for friends that are interested in wolves. Barry Lopez has done an excellent job of bringing the truth about wolves out. He has not written a biased book but has explained the reasoning of trappers, livestock owners, etc. But he has also told of the immense cruelties the European descendants have inflicted on the wolf and that the cruelty is a reflection of self more than of the “evil” of the wolf. His chapters on the relationship between the Native Americans and wolf are also very interesting and it show how the man separate from nature beliefs of the Europeans and the man as a part of nature beliefs of the Native Americans differ. Although this book was originally published decades ago it is still relevant, maybe even more so today.

First chapter was OK, but offered little current information about wolves. The rest was fairy tales, folklore, and mysticism. Had to put it down after five chapters. I wish I had my money back.

The historical prospective was the most interesting portion of the book.

Well written. One of the best books on wolves out there. Lopez is a naturalist and a bit of a poet, and seems to have an empathy for his subjects that goes beyond, though it includes, science.

There's a millennial ring to the title of Bittman's massive opus of more than 1000 basic recipes and variations as the widely known food writer ("The Minimalist" is a weekly column in the New York Times) and author (Fish) contributes to the list of recently published authoritative, encyclopedic cookbooks. He concedes that most accomplished cooks will find little new here, and indeed the recipes can be as simple as how to pop corn. His voice is a comfortable one, however, so the tone is less tutorial than, say, that of the newly revised Joy of Cooking. While much of the ground covered is familiar, Bittman offers inventive fare (Kale Soup with Soy and Lime) and reclaims formerly abandoned territory?his Creamy Vinaigrette calls for heavy cream. Pastas range from Spaghetti and Meatballs to Pad Thai. Similarly, sandwiches include both old favorites and fresh combinations, e.g., Curried Pork Tenderloin Sandwich with Chutney and Arugula. Bittman's friends, he says, praise his Chicken Adobo as the best chicken dish in the world. He doesn't linger too long with beef because Americans are eating less of it; he remarks that a well-done hamburger is not worth eating. This is my cookbook. There are many like it, but this one is mine.I purchased this in 2005. I figure thirteen years is a long enough trial period so I'm finally writing a review. Before I purchased this book I could grill steaks and cook pasta from the box but that was about the extent of my culinary expertise. Thanks to this book I can make eggs any way you want, or lobster bisque, or truss a bird efficiently.This is the cookbook I pick up first. I appreciate that Bittman lays down fundamentals (examples: what equipment you should have in your kitchen, or what you need to know about buying fish) and also suggests variants for recipes. I've loaned it out to other folks probably a dozen times and most of my friends wound up buying their own copies - or borrowing mine again :)If you're already a chef you probably won't pick up anything new but if you're just starting out in the kitchen (or starting over), you'll find it invaluable.

THIS IS THE BOOK YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!! Before I start, I did not receive this product in exchange for a review, or whatever, I really do feel this strongly about it...This will be the best cook book you'll buy, ever, and you'll save by discovering so many things you can cook from what you already have, or common ingredients and spices. I am a stay at home mom of three, and would just cringe whenever I'd serve dinner, I didn't know what the heck to cook and so it was basically a rotating menu of baked/breaded meat, mashed potatoes or plain rice, and a canned/frozen vegetable. Maybe some pasta and sauce, mac and cheese, box sides, etc. Sometimes I'd get fancy and cook a tuna or broccoli casserole. To make matters worse, I'm a strict vegetarian and s I'd only eat the sides, or pre packaged stuff. I am telling you this to say that within an hour or 2 of getting this book I was able to put together a weeks worth of much tastier, more wonderful meals that everyone loved using my crappy pantry ingredients/common spices I happened to have.When I went grocery shopping, I knew exactly what to get and my cart was mostly pantry ingredients and fresh veggies--which was always my goal but didn't know where to start. The leftovers (especially if you freeze and rotate) make great (cheap/tasty) lunches....and there's lots of recipes that use leftovers too. I also purchased the vegetarian version, which is just as amazing!

I have the hard book earlier edition of this book which I really like. I purchased the newer version as a Kindle Edition. Big mistake. I hate using the Kindle edition. For example, if one is reading about making a sauce and a link is suggested for a variation of the sauce and you click on it, guess what? You cannot get back where you started unless you wrote down the location number (no page numbering is provided). Come on! Why not allow a user to revert back to the previous page as one would be able to do if using the dictionary to look up a word. It may sound petty, but it is frustrating to me not being able to get back to the previous page. (I know that I could book mark the page, but that is not the point.)

This is a massive, encyclopedic work about cooking. There is so much information in here. I've tried several recipes already, to positive results. In particular, the Yogurt Biscuit recipe was earth-shattering. I've been trying to make homemade biscuits for some time now, with marginal success at best. Who knew that the secret is yogurt? I was very skeptical of this, but I tried it anyways. They were some of the best biscuits I've ever had in my life. I must say that I don't necessarily agree with every statement I have read in the book. But that is quite alright. It is just onr man's opinion. Bittman's opinions are no less valid than my own, to be sure. We just have different approaches to certain things. I think that's what the author would want. He seems to write this book as a stepping stone on your journey to successful cooking. He doesn't want the book to be the be-all end-all of your cooking repertoire. He wants it to be an educational experience that unlocks your own potential as a skilled cook. I love this book so far and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

My hunt for the greatest vegetarian cookbook is over. Unfortunately, it has been a long and expensive hunt. This book covers the ground of every other vegetarian cookbook, which means that my shelves are being cleared of all but 3 cookbooks, and those dozens of time and money wasting vegetarian cookbooks are on their way to Goodwill.The Survivors:1. How to Cook Everything Vegetarian, by: Mark Bittman (this book)2. The Joy of Cooking (every kitchen should basically come with this book pre-installed)3. Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day, by: Jeff Hertzberg, M.D. & Zoe Francois (and the local baker hasn't seen us since)

I could have three cookbooks: Best Recipes (for when I want science), Betty Crocker (for when I want Americana), and this. This is much less fussy than Best Recipes, and has a huge amount of suggestions for varying, combining, and using the leftovers from these meals. If I have some vegetable or other and I don't know what to make with it, this is where I'd go first, because chances are good that I have the other ingredients on hand.I haven't liked every recipe I've tried, but there's so much variety in this book that I don't mind that. Very different from some other (especially "healthy" or "simple") cookbooks where I can flip through and out of hundreds of recipes none of them sound appealing. Speaking of simplicity, here's someone who gets it. There isn't a lot of "weird" in here - these are recipes that I could make part of our regular rotation.

The best Cookbook I own. I got it for my birthday; I had been using my girlfriend's first edition. Not only are the recipes good, he explains a lot of things either along the way or in dedicated spots in the book. I'm always telling my girlfriend, "Bittman, don't fail me now." When I started with my girlfriend's, I was just starting to branch out in my cooking last year, and it was an excellent guide. Now that I have gained more experience with both cooking and baking, Bittman's book is even more enjoyable.

Although Card's popular science fiction and fantasy have always been permeated with religious themes, this version of the life of Sarah, Abraham's wife, is more in keeping with his lesser known Stone Tables, a reconstruction of the life of Moses. In his afterword, Card explains that here he is not an apologist for the Bible, but rather "an apologist for Sarah, a tough, smart, strong, bright woman in an era when women did not show up much in historical records." He takes the tantalizingly rich references to Sarah in the book of Genesis and determines to bring her to life for his readers. This novel is not an epic volume rich in cultural and historical detail about ancient Mesopotamia, Canaan and Egypt. Its focus is more what Card does best: exploring human motives and relationships, and the role of faith in individual lives. The entire novel is told exclusively from the point of view of Sarah and her sister Qira, whom Card has created as Lot's wife. Qira is the blind, selfish materialist who cannot understand the kindness or self-sacrifice of the faithful who surround her and who chafes against her husband's authority. Sarah, by contrast, is a wise and virtuous figure who struggles to have the unflinching faith of Abraham, even though she glimpses God's presence in her life only rarely. The narrative is sometimes uneven, and the sprinkling of references to LDS theology may be awkward for the non-Mormon reader. One of the best books ever. I had the privilege to meet Orson Scott Card in a book signing once. I brought the Women of Genesis books (all 3) to be signed. He whispered to me, "The Women of Genesis is my most proudest work." Which is amazing considering he is famous for Ender's Game...but once you read this series you can understand why. It is so brilliant and really makes these Bible stories come alive.

A beautiful story from the Bible, given the depth and life it deserves.Orson Scott Card is a master of the twist, and there were several in this book I didn't see coming. It was a delight to read scenes from this story, knowing the conclusion but wondering how the characters would come to it. Card paints ancient Egypt in a light I've never considered before, brings honor and reverence to the shepherd life of Abram, and brings a level of realism to the debauchery of Sodom and the story of Lot's wife.As with many other stories from Card, I found the internal monologue of Sarai a bit much at times—I remember feeling similarly when reading 'Ender's Shadow' years ago. This didn't make the book any less intriguing, and I enjoyed the story and the characters from start to finish.

Orson Scott Card is well-known for his science fiction novels, especially Ender's Game (Ender, Book 1). Now he ventures into the stories of women of the Bible. Card himself states, "Women did not show up much in historical records."The book is a retelling of the biblical story of Sarah, wife of Abram. The setting is in the Middle East during ancient times. At the age of ten, Sarah meets Abram and falls in love at first sight. He pledges to come back and marry her and within ten years, he does. Card portrays Sarai as a courageous Hebrew woman from the house of Ur, always devoted to her husband, the patriarch, Abram. She deals with desert life, barrenness and jealousy. Their marriage takes her from Ur, a city on the banks of the Euphrates River in ancient Sumeria, to Canaan, Pharaoh's palace in Egypt, and back again.We can't possibly know if the real Sarai acted and reacted as Card writes her because the Biblical account of her is sketchy. In this book, she is a living, breathing, complex woman. Cultural and social details are there (not plentiful), but the overriding subject is Sarah and her relationships. She admirably tolerates her ever-complaining sister, Qira.I found it refreshing to read about Abram through the eyes of his wife.In this fictional account, the author combines historical and archeological details, the Genesis account and his imagination to bring Sarai to life. If you can accept that certain details are changed to suit the author's pen, you will enjoy this sensitive recreation of Sarai, wife of Abraham. Some of the male/female dynamics are not quite accurate due to the male dominated hierarchy of the time but they add zest to the story.I admire the author (male) for going out on a limb to recreate a biblical character (female). I wanted to like this book more than I did. I was somewhat put off because it was heavy on dialogue that sounded very modern.Reviewed by Holly Weiss, author of Crestmont

One of Card's remarkable talents is the ability to craft a character that thoroughly engages the reader's interest while remaining persistently unrealistic. His characters all seem so alive and fascinating to me that it startled me to remember that no one I know would think or behave in the ways he describes. And yet I like his characters so much, at least at first, that sometimes I wish I had a friend like them.This Bible story has many weird events that imply strong, complex players, a situation Card handles without many surprises. Lot doesn't really make an appearance whereas his wife is one of Card's stupid bullies. Perhaps Card's interest in having babies (Bean was my favorite of Card's creations before he inevitably became another outlet for Card's obsession with reproduction) helps him handle the handmaiden breeding issue with aplomb in this book. I'd often viewed Hagar's story as kind of puzzling but Card's spin is believable without sacrificing the integrity of any of the personalities.I really like both Card and the Bible, and this is well written and does bear Card's stamp of the occasional psychological showdown so I'm happy with this work overall, but in some ways I'd wanted to see something riskier and more surprising. Maybe it would be too blasphemous for Card to write the personality of God and have him debate strategy with Abraham the way he likes his child-warriors to do in other books, but that's what I would really pay a lot to see.

I love Biblical fiction. I love Orson Scott Card. I love this series. Of course, as Scott Card himself warns, if you believe in the inerrancy of the Bible, you'll be a bit bothered by some of the choices he makes. But, obviously, you can't read Biblical fiction expecting complete accuracy. I felt that Scott Card did a beautiful job bringing Sarah and Abraham and their adventures to life.

3.5 starsAnnabelle, who was a minor character in the first book, is now the main character in this book. This book starts out with her becoming a widow. She was not married in the last book, so we learn bits and pieces of her story as we read. Her husband has a ranch in Idaho that she is going to go to in order to get away from Fountain Creek. She puts out an advertisement to get a driver to accompany her along the way, and her husband's brother responds, not knowing she is the widow, nor knowing his brother has even died.Matthew Taylor, who was also a minor character from the last book, does not like Annabelle one bit and knows that she worked in the local brothel. He is so angry that his brother would marry such a woman. She must have only married him to get out of that brothel but she probably has continued her harlot ways. When he sees Annabelle needs to go to Idaho, he is too desperate for money to refuse.Another portion of this story involves Annabelle longing to rescue a young girl she knew from the brothel she worked at. She wants to get her out and help her, but has no idea where she has been sent to. Her goal is to have her live with her on her new homestead. She doesn't know how to tell this to Matthew though, because why would he even care?I enjoyed this story. It was definitely about seeing how people can grow, change, and forgive. It was a historic Christian fiction story that had problems that weren't always so easy to solve. There were times though in reading this that I think the author expect us to figure out what happened, as there are slight gaps here and there.

I loved this book and it will be one I read again and again. Annabel is a former prostitute who is bought by a man who loves and marries her. When he dies leaving her pregnant and unable to get from Colorado to their ranch in Idaho by herself, she must hire someone to drive her wagon. Her husband's half brother Matthew, applies for the job. Matthew hates that his brother married someone like her and never misses a chance to tell her. But he needs the job and she knows he won't bother her on the long trip by wagon. The spiritual and emotional growth and the power of forgiveness of one's self and others is revealed throughout the story. The historical setting is a plus and the characters are real and interesting. Love this book.

I loved this book of redemption and love. What wonderful multi faceted characters Ms. Alexander writes into her stories. I didn't believe it possible that I could love another book as well as I did book #1 of Fountain Creek. However, I was wrong, Annie's story was every bit as good as Kathryn's.Great storyline that you won't want to put down once you've started, terrifically built characters with human flaws, struggles and misgivings, wonderfully written and highly entertaining...love the added sense of humor. Best of all.. is the writers love of Christ and familiarity with biblical scripture. I am so grateful to have stumbled upon this author, I can't wait to get lost in another one of her novels.

Tamera Alexander is a great author. She has a way of grasping your emotions and bringing things to the surface in your own life. I've only read the first two books in this series and am anxious to read the rest. It is hard to put one of her books down. I look forward to reading more of her books, hoping they will be as exciting and thought provoking as the first two in this series.

The subject matter is definitely PG-13. It's about an ex-prostitute who was bought out by a wonderful man who loved her, married her, and asked for nothing in return. Pregnant with their first child, she finds herself widowed and headed back to Fountain Creek.The subject matter was a bit touchee, but it worked very well. I didn't like Matthew at first, but he grew on me. Though it was hard to believe how quickly his distaste turned to acceptance, by the end I was happy. I wasn't completely satisfied by the ending though...It was a good book, though I did enjoy the first better. It had plenty of adventure in it, which always makes a book more interesting. There were many times when I found myself not wanting to turn off the Kindle...

This is a wonderful sequel (although it could stand alone) to Tamera Alexander's Fountain Creek Chronicles series! This is by far my favorite author! It is wonderful story of redemption and forgiveness. Although I initially resisted reading a story based on pioneer life, this series was so wonderful and would definitely be enjoyed by anyone! do yourself a favor and read all three books in this series!

I appreciate the love and forgiveness of Christ being spread throughout the story. I love the time period and the character development. While sometimes predictable, the story is sweet.

I enjoyed this book very much, and it was slightly like "Pride and Prejudice" except in this tale the hero was the prejudiced one and the heroine (his widowed sister-in-law) had a sort of stubbornness (took her about 60+ times to get a fire started.) Annabelle, however, had a very troubled past that Matthew refused to make allowance for because he didn't know all the details and didn't want to know them either. A dysfunctional start to a long and "unfriendly" trip which had an amazing ending.

Pat Davis does a good job with an overview of the rules of badminton. You get a brief history, racquet, shuttle, court and scoring information, faults and even a chapter on officials. There are some weaknesses: The wording in the scoring section left me wondering who could do what when the score was tied at 14. The diagrams are in meters with approximate English measurements - the width of the court comes out a foot too narrow. Despite the minor faults, this book will let the reader understand the basic rules of badminton.

I give this book one star because there really is nothing new in the book, as far a Earth Magic, the title is miss leading, I really was looking for something that wasn't Michael Harner based, but this is what you will be getting. I left Michael Harner's group years ago mainly because he was giving out a you are a shaman cards with a number and every thing just for joining his group, it takes a lifetime of training and you don't just become a shaman because you read a book. This book is okay for someone that is just starting out, very elementary, Farmer clams there are some advanced rituals in this book, there is nothing that a beginner can't do, so for these people you would like to learn some about other worlds, faeries and the like, how to find your spirit animal, beginner stuff like that, some soul retrieval meditations, then it would be a good place to start,over half of the book is used to convince you about shamanism. If your looking for ways to help heal the earth with ceremony, don't waist your money.

This is a good book, but I don't know if I would recommend it as an introductory book. It should be the one you read after a broader based book on Native American spirituality. It delves into meditative journey's and the like, which can be fun if you are able. I am too grounded for most of the techniques mentioned here in. Perhaps after more personal training and educating I will be able to reach the meditative realms that he speaks of in places other than my dream world.

Clear, well written introduction (for me) to shamanism and animal powers. The basics I believe are covered well. The author has a concrete, clear writing style. It discusses concepts of "earth magic" on which the Earth Magic Oracle Cards by same author are also based. This book seems also geared for those on the path to becoming a shaman. The book, however, is not a guidebook for the cards. You don't need to purchase this book in order to interpret the cards. That being said, IT CERTAINLY DOESN'T HURT TO READ THE BOOK.

My Bible

I love Steven Farmers book and since I also have his Earth Magic Oracle Cards I had to get this one too. It is a nice companion book to the cards. He makes the book so nice to read with stories to go along with what he is helping you to understand.

Good book with practical advice and strategies - relevant to today's world.

What can I say? Read it, try it.

Enjoying it, easy to relate to.
