“Informative.” “Descriptive.” “Relatable.” These are all words that I would use to describe The Art of the Pitch, by Peter Coughter. From the first sentence in Chapter One to the final paragraph in Chapter Eleven, Coughter is able to capture the reader’s attention and hold onto it, keeping him or her engaged and wanting to read more, until there is no more to read. By using simple sentence structures, telling stories from company executives to support his claims, and connecting to the reader by using his own personal experiences, Coughter has mastered the art of talking to people, which is clearly evident throughout this book. As I read The Art of the Pitch, I truly felt that Coughter could have been sitting there having a conversation with me, which is not a feat that just any author, or presenter for that matter, can do. He applies the skills for effective presentations to writing his book, and that makes it all the more evident that he is extremely credible when it comes to mastering the art of presentations. After all, according to Coughter, “everything is a presentation,” so it only makes sense that he is able to take his own advice and apply it to the style of his book. Think about that. “Everything is a presentation.” I believe that is arguably the most important concept in this book. Coughter begins by dedicating the entire first chapter to this concept, but he is able to intertwine it into each proceeding chapter thereafter, and in the final chapter, once again states, “Everything is a presentation, remember?” And although this book was targeted towards those who would be giving business presentations, I was able to take many of the concepts and apply them to my life as a student. There is something that nearly anyone can take from this book, and that is yet another reason why Coughter, in my opinion, excels at relating to whomever he may be addressing. By having the mentality that everything is a presentation, you can more effortlessly take the rest of those concepts in the book and apply them to whatever it may be that you wish to accomplish. However, just the basic mentality that “everything is a presentation” is only going to get you about halfway to the finish line, so to speak. Throughout the book, Coughter also goes into details about every aspect of a presentation that one should look to perfect. From visuals to word choice to punctuation, he dissects every little piece that one should consider when preparing any kind of presentation for any kind of audience, whether it is a small meeting of two or three people or an entire lecture hall full of students. One of the most important points that stuck out to me was that you have to know the material you are presenting. This may seem trivial, but Coughter argues that one cannot simply memorize their presentation; they must know it. He argues that memorization hurts a presenter because, more often than not, that presenter is going to draw a blank at some point during the presentation. If and when this happens, he may skip over even more important parts, and this can affect not only the rest of the presentation, but also the authenticity of the work being presented. Audiences crave authenticity, and Coughter argues that memorization can put that in jeopardy. Coughter knows what his audiences want, and one of the ways to give that to them is by absolutely whole-heartedly knowing the material. I believe another one of the main reasons Coughter has mastered the art of relating to audiences is because he himself acknowledges that he is a human being. He knows he has experiences people can relate to. He knows he can tell stories to make an emotional connection with others. He knows that the only way to truly connect with his audience is if he is his true self: not Peter Coughter the Presenter, but Peter Coughter the Person. Throughout the book, he argues that many presenters, no matter what level of experience they have, forget this one common fact and do not apply it to their presentations. This is why they are not able to sell their product or idea: because no matter how great an idea is, if you cannot relate to your audience, you are not going to sell the product. I would, however, like to point out one improvement that Coughter could have made to his book. As I was reading, I noticed that the entire book was very repetitive. Some of those repetitions were meant to emphasize his point or revisit an idea brought up in a previous chapter, such as the topic of not memorizing your entire presentation. I understand the point of those repetitions, and Coughter did a wonderful job by bring them back up at the right times to make one idea relate to another. However, when staying on one topic, he spent a lot of time repeating his main point, whether it was just stating it another way or telling multiple stories about it when they were not all necessary. One prime example of this was in Chapter Four, when Coughter was discussing the power of emotion. He continues to emphasize the point that the only way to truly convey emotion to an audience is by telling the truth, and the only way to tell the truth is by being our true selves. It is a simple idea, and it was fascinating to hear his supporting stories and arguments for it. However, one personal experience and one story, in my opinion, would have been enough to convey the idea and move on. Instead, Coughter proceeded to use one personal experience and three different stories to portray virtually the same concept. Of course, this is just one example of the unnecessary repetition I am talking about, but it is evident throughout the book and it is something that I would personally have liked to see less of. Nonetheless, Coughter still does a superb job at revolutionizing the way businessmen, or anyone for that matter, can give a presentation. I was not in the target audience for The Art of the Pitch, but I was still able to take lessons from this book and apply them to my life and studies. It is amazing that just by making simple changes when doing something as natural as talking people, such as changing your tone of voice or making eye contact, you can portray a level of confidence that you were not even aware you could reach in the first place. And so, I would recommend this book to virtually anyone who wants to work on not only their presentation skills, but their people skills as well. Because after all, “everything is a presentation.”

I majored in mathematics at a small university, and was fearful I wouldn't do well in the Math Subject GRE because of the small department I came from. This book offers great examples and helps to expand your knowledge and refresh your memory before the test. There are lots of little typos, they trip you up for a second and then you realize that they literally typed the wrong numbers. However there are less benign problems too - for example on page 240 it says that for ANY group homomorphism the order of a finite element is the same as the order of its image under the homomorphism, but this is straight up FALSE. It's true for the injective case, and otherwise the best you can say is that the order of the image divides the order of the element. This is an atrocious lie about basic group theory, and leads you to incorrect answers when doing the practice problems. Who knows how many other nontrivial typos there are?

This is book is basically a crash course on undergrad mathematics and then some practice tests. The practice problems at the end of each chapter we're nothing like the practice tests nor the real test.You would be much better off finding practice tests on the internet and using your textbooks from your classes if you get stuck.

Nice review, especially in linear algebra and calculus.Three things that could be possibly improved in the future:1. Maybe there should be more practice tests.2. There should be more materials in abstract algebra, especially theory of rings. Also, group theory is not limited to classification and numbering finite Abel groups as the book might indicate. Be careful.3. Also, the real analysis part...Lebesgue integration is nice, while you still have to know things in a typical one-year undergrad analysis sequence.

It's a good review book. The review sections, definitions, and explanations of the answers are extremely helpful. However, there are some explanations that are hard to understand.For example, in the Pre-Calculus sections at the beginning of the book, it uses the sum of roots theorem to solve a problem. I found it much easier to set both equations equal to each other, simplify them, and then set the non-square root parts of both equations equal to each other solve for B in terms of b.

This book was okay I guess. In the end I felt a little bit like this book was not as helpful as it could have been. Most of the practice problems in the actual chapters are in a written response format, not a multiple choice format. Also, I would agree with the claim that most of the problems in the book are simpler than those found on the actual test. If you already know the math concepts and need help with taking the test (i.e. time management, guessing strategies....etc.), this book will only be marginally helpful. I got a good enough score to seemingly get into graduate school, so I will be okay, but I was disappointed that the book did not give me a lot of help on taking the actual test.

This book really helped me prepare for the GRE. The chapters are easy to follow and there are a plethora of questions to do

When the census taker looked at them, he saw colored first, asking questions like single or married, trying to introduce shame where there was none. They could ask whatever they wanted, but what he should have been marking in the book was family, and landholder, and educated, each generation gathering momentum, adding something special to the brew. This book was INTENSE! The time-frame is from the 1830s to the 1930s. The backdrop was in Louisiana on a medium-sized Creole plantation owned by a family named Derbanne. The four main women in the book were Elisabeth, Suzette, Philomene, and Emily.The author, Lalita Tademy, created this work of fiction based on stories she heard about her great, great, great, great grandmother, who happened to be the girl in the fifth generation in the book. While the time and experiences shared in the book were based on historical facts, the story line itself was a work of fiction created from the author's own mind on how life might have been like for her great, great, great, great grandmother.I normally do not like reading books like this, however, I found myself enjoying the dynamics of each complex character and how the women found a way to overcome what life threw at them no matter how the dice rolled against them. I found this a very emotional read and enjoyed the book until the end. The end pissed me off so much that I threw the book across the room. I felt it was wrong to end the book the way the author did.

An extraordinary amount of painstaking research went into this work of fiction based on the author's family history covering 4 generations living in rural Louisiana.As often happens in these multi generational epics, much time is spent on setting up the story and the introductory characters. The reader has a better knowledge and understanding of their lives than the later characters which are not drawn in such detail or given as much room for their stories to unfold.Nevertheless, I found the novel riveting and meticulously written. I enjoyed learning about the role of the Creoles and freedmen who lived side-by-side with the white French masters, the slaves and their mixed race children.Some readers may find this book slow going but as I have an interest in the era I enjoyed it. I thoroughly enjoyed the appended photos of the family members.The author has done a tremendous job of bringing her ancestors to life and in retelling their stories. I look forward to reading more of her work.

**Spoilers**The book is based on Lalita Tademy family history. She did a Fantastic job of merging historical fact and family lore into fiction. It spans 137 years of family history centered on three female characters; Suzette, Philome (Suzette's daughter by a frenchman named Eugene Daurat) and Emily (Philomene's daughter with a white man named Narcisse Fredieu). The book covers the civil war, the end of slavery and the beginning of the Jim Crow era. They are all strong female characters but the strongest one is without a doubt Philomene. She is the one that holds the family together and is the one that is able get to her own land after the end of slavery. Emily has five children with a frenchman named Joseph Billes and from an early age is taught that her fair skin makes her quality and places her above the Negroes and colored of the time. Nonetheless, because she was born to a mulatto woman she is considered colored in central Louisiana and her relationship with Joseph is frowned upon. When the Jim Crow laws come into effect Emily and her family are persecuted in a vicious way by the emerging Klu Klux Klan. As a result her partner is forced to marry into a white family and that marks the beginning of the end for Joseph Billes. Even though Emily and her children could pass for white in any other part of the country, Joseph and her never contemplate leaving the state of Louisiana. I read it for the first time in 2002 but enjoyed it more the second time around. I Highly recommend it.

Ms. Tademy's novels brings to life what it was like to be a slave in the concrete. These are real people who endure (or, tragically, not) a most horrific existence. The Confederate South has nothing to be proud of. Ordinary, poor white people got involved in this violent oppression because the land and slave holders made the slaves into scape goats -- the cause of all the ills suffered by whites -- while they made themselves rich off the misery of all. They are no heroes, they're criminals and should go down in history as such. Ms. Tademy's novels help to tell this truth.What does stand out are the courageous and heroic people who loved, endured, shared, comforted and held together as best they could under the shackles and whips of the slave holders. They are our heroes!

If you read only one book in the coming year, make it this one. Following the lives of four major characters the book reads like non-fiction. The depth of characters is amazing. You'll find yourself feeling love and anger toward the women as their lives unfold. Page after page, you're taken on a journey you're not going to soon forget.

By chance I had come across Lalita Tademy's second novel -- Red River -- in a book store. Bought it, read it, and was mesmerized by it. That led me to the author's original work, Cane River, this one exploring her mother's side of the family (Red River explores her father's side).No need to rehash the entire book, that's been done in all of those hundreds of reviews. Suffice it to say that I enjoyed Cane River tremendously, and that it should be mandatory reading for anyone who truly seeks to understand an important part of the history and heritage of the United States. Tademy has an uncanny knack of crafting an informative, compelling and often heart-wrenching novel super-imposed on historic and well-researched fact. She fluidly moves across generations without ever leaving the jarring breaks that so often mars writing that covers extended periods of time and characters that move in and out of the picture.Yet another talent of the author is to depict often divisive and disturbing events in a passionate, but never judgmental manner. By doing so, she very clearly makes her points, but never preaches or attacks. This helps keeping readers' minds open, even about events that most prefer to forget or not be confronted with.If I had one minor wish, it'd be for images in the Kindle version to be of higher resolution so as to enhance the readability of the various included historic documents.

I had the privilege of studying under Dr. Orrick. His thoughtfulness, warmth, love for Christ, and the stories of his adventures stood out in class and they certainly stand out in this book. Mere Calvinism is a rich, biblical exposition of the doctrines of grace. Sadly, those great, life-warming doctrines are often rejected in our modern evangelical circles. Orrick beautifully explains the doctrines, unpacks their biblical roots, clarifies misconceptions, and answers popular objections in a very plain, simple, easy-to-understand way. Many of the common objections to the Reformed faith grow out of a spirit of autonomy. Orrick challenges the would-be autonomous man and points him to Scripture at every point. I highly recommend this book!

Mere Calvinism is the most helpful and accessible book on the Doctrines of Grace. Everyone can read this book and benefit from it. I think other works on the Doctrines of Grace can be very helpful, but they can miss a personal/pastoral element to the work. However, this cannot be said of Mere Calvinism. It is pastoral and personal on every page. This book shows that the Doctrines of Grace are not dull or dead, but the Doctrines of Grace are living doctrines! Throughout the work, Orrick shows that the Doctrines of Grace relate to everyday life and they should cause us to find joy in God!

I started the book yesterday and am already up to page 77...definitely not a fast reader. But the writing style and information conveyed makes it an easy read. The information is solid.

Succinct. Clear. Very readable. Excellent discussion questions. Great illustrations. Helpful chapter on what must be true if the five points are not. I highly recommend it both as an introduction or review of the subject.

By far the most controversial issue I deal with in pastoral ministry is Reformed theology. This is both a positive and a negative. The negative side regards debates over predestination, the extent of the atonement, etc. which are often ugly, needlessly divisive, and often distract us from the real mission at hand. On the other hand conservative evangelicals largely were not debating these issues two or three decades ago because at the time, we were having to defend the authority of Scripture and the exclusivity of the gospel.With that said, I continue to explore the issue. I am firm in my own convictions but open to the views different than my own. One new release that has peaked my interest is Mere Calvinism by Jim Orrick of Boyce College.Most works that explore Reformed theology from a favorable or unfavorable perspective are typically either academic, thus somewhat cold and distant for the average reader, or hostile in tone. Dr. Orrick’s volume is none of these. Orrick offers an honest and unapologetic defense of Calvinism that is both pastoral and winsome.It is important to make this clear from the beginning. Those who are already 5-point Calvinists will love virtually everything about this book. Yet those who find disagreement with the professor will at least give him a fair hearing even when he comes down strongly for his positions.This is the real strength of the book. Dr. Orrick writes with academic precision but with the heart of a pastor who wants to win the reader over but more than that he wants the reader, even his detractors, to see the beauty and practical importance of Reformed theology.Regarding his defense of Calvinism, I would recommend picking up the book yourself. Those familiar with the debates will find familiar territory here. Orrick’s use of illustrations to explain his argument is unique and a blessed addition (his use of a sponge to describe total depravity was particularly helpful). His clarifying between true Calvinism and false Calvinism (“they don’t believe in missions”) is much needed especially if the debate is to bear any real fruit moving forward.In the end, for those serious about engaging these issues, Orrick has offered one of the best books I have come across. For those sympathetic to Orrick’s conclusions, this is an invaluable tool for your positions. For those who disagree with him, at the very least, take his arguments seriously.
