and I'm gonna play it a lot! I bought this product gently used, so there were a couple of dings and minor rips on the edges, but they are extremely minor. There aren't any marks in the book, and the CD is in perfect condition. I recently got a new alto sax, and I haven't played one in about 15 years (eek, I feel old!). This book will be a great tool to help me relearn the instrument. :) The book has many different familiar and recognizable tunes, several theory exercises, scale studies, and a full fingering chart.

Our grade school 2nd sax player needs this for school. It is challenging him a bit, but getting other fun Disney and movie soundtracks makes practice more fun.

ive read things on the first few chapters that were never covered in other fish care books......im so glad i got it...it has a lot on water,,,,,even though i thought i new all about cycling and the changes the tank goes threw this covers so much more...its a great book to have on hand and hopfully one wont need it for disease but if you do i find it very good ....

I had low expectations for this book because of the "super simple" subtitle. Turns out to be quite decent and adequately detailed. However, it is not complete enough. For example, the author mentions Argulus many times in conjunction with other ailments, but never discusses Argulus itself. So that's why only 4 stars.

This is a nice book on pond and aquarium fish diseases. Lots of color photographs to help identify diseases, and suggestions for treatment.Written with a slight British flavor and point of view, it stillgives a great deal of information. While not as in-depth as Untergasser'streatise on fish disease, it is a good first choice to look up your ailing fish's symptoms and treatment.

Part Two of this book (98 pages) describes in detail the many diseases that can afflict fish, their causes, and what to do about them. Illustrated with small but clear photos of the ailments, along with "Diagnostic Pointers" and "Treatment," this section will be useful for the hobbyist at all levels of their expertise. The final chapter of Part Two also addresses "Medicines, Sedation, and Euthanasia", and how to best quarantine a new or ailing fish, so as not to infect the rest of an established collection in your pond or aquarium.For the beginner, Part One (58 pages) has invaluable information, and is titled "Learning the Basics". The chapter on water quality is superb, with an excellent description of the "Nitrate Cycle", which includes the ammonia/nitrite content, potentially deadly if not kept in check by testing, and especially necessary during the first few months of starting up an aquarium, sometimes referred to as "new tank syndrome." I wish I had read this book before setting up my tank, as I would have been more wary of the soaring nitrate level that caused a little fantail to depart for goldfish heaven.Jepson writes at length about "The Five Freedoms" (developed by John Webster in 1995), which are 1: Freedom from thirst, hunger, and malnutrition. 2: Freedom from discomfort. 3: Freedom from pain, injury, and disease. 4: Freedom to express most normal behavior. 5: Freedom from fear and distress. These principles apply to all living creatures, but for the beginner fish hobbyist, how to provide them is sometimes a complex mystery, as one has to learn how to set up an "ecosystem" that is foreign to us. Veterinarian Jepson, who is a member of the British Veterinary Society among other prestigious affiliations, tells us how to achieve these goals for our finned friends, and writes in a succinct, no-nonsense style, and though the information is sometimes quite technical, it is always easy to understand.

Walter Scheidel tackles a very ambitious project here. He attempts nothing less than a one volume account of economic inequality throughout all of human history. In my opinion he succeeds brilliantly.This is a book of impressive scholarship. It is rare that someone is motivated to study this topic without an obvious political and policy agenda. Even after finishing the book I still could not tell you what Professor Scheidel’s political views are. The book is descriptive not prescriptive.The thesis of the book is that, throughout all of human history, only violent cataclysms and plagues have produced significant and long standing reductions in economic inequality. Peace and prosperity always tend to lead to increasing inequality over the long term. With the benefit of hindsight, this is less surprising than it first appears. The overwhelming majority of humans have always lived with little or no economic savings or financial net worth. That is the constant.Peace and prosperity necessarily change the net worth and income of the richest more than the poorest because the economic situation of the poorest just can’t get a lot worse. The effect of compounding earnings is very powerful and not intuitively well understood by most people. This effect is even more dramatic when it spans several generations in a family. Increasing (or at least high and stable) inequality has been the default tendency throughout all of human history.Scheidel cites what he calls the Four Horsemen of economic leveling: mass mobilization warfare, transformative revolution, state collapse and plagues as the only forces that have consistently led to major economic leveling. It is important to note that only mass mobilization warfare has this effect. Ordinary warfare tends to shift fortunes between victor and vanquished without overall leveling.The period of the 20th Century that included the two World Wars and the communist revolutions represented one of the great economic levelings in all of human history. Those of us who grew up just after those events consequently have a somewhat distorted view of what is a typical historical level of economic inequality. Before reading this book I felt that there was something abnormal about he increasing degree of economic inequality we see around us. After reading it I feel like I knew all along this was inevitable. It is a rare book that can change your perspective like that.Scheidel is not arguing that economic inequality is good. He is well aware of the role of plunder and cronyism in contributing to it. He realizes that economic inequality is problematic for a number of reasons including the possibility that it may contain the seeds of the next cataclysm. He is just giving the history here not making any argument about the appropriate policy response.It’s not that the cataclysms that produce leveling don’t also hurt the poor. They always do. It’s just that the rich have a lot more to lose when a lot of people lose everything. Scheidel closes with this: “All of us who prize greater economic equality would do well to remember that with the rarest of exceptions, it was only ever brought forth in sorrow. Be careful what you wish for.”To put it another way, and to put it in the words of Woody Allen, after the next great leveling we may well look back on the previous period of inequality and think “We were happy then but we didn’t know it."

Walter Scheidel, author of The Great Leveler, provides a scientifically rigorous, excruciatingly detailed and politically agnostic survey of wealth inequality from pre-history to the present. The focus is on factors that reduce, or level, that inequality and the core message is disheartening.Given the far-reaching scope, in both time and geography, finding reliable and comparable data related to wealth requires making some assumptions — actually, a LOT of assumptions. But he’s very straightforward about that, explaining each at length including, for example, how burial practices might indicate wealth, how measures of wheat could be stand in for wages and — at least in the modern world — how reported income may not accurately reflect hidden assets.He relies heavily on one metric especially, the Gini coefficient, which attempts to capture wealth inequality in a closed system (say, a country) in which zero represents full wealth and resource equality for all members (everyone has as much as everyone else) and 1 equaling maximum inequality, in which one person possesses all the wealth.It’s a thorough and far-reaching study leading to a disheartening and inescapable conclusion: wealth and resource inequality (which is maximized by the compounding advantages of wealth, access to political influence and the narrowing effects of inheritance) — has always been part of the human experience.In his view, only four things have ever leveled inequality in any significant way — mass mobilization warfare (WWI and WWII, for example), pandemics (the Plague), transformative revolutions (as in, the communist variety) and state collapse.He walks readers through many, many explorations of each of the four examples, studying before and after wealth and resource distribution from countries around the globe and throughout recorded history (and even a bit before).The research brings to life a troubling trend — a gulf of wealth inequality that continually increases, putting the capital and resources into the hands of a small (and shrinking) wealthy elite while extracting them from basically everyone else (especially the working- and lower-classes). Then one of the four levelers unwinds and the rich — who have the most to lose — slip down the social scale and working poor (who suddenly have a resource that’s in demand — their labor) are able to charge more and live more cheaply, and so move up the scale.Then it all starts over again.His research skills are incredible, so perhaps it’s no surprise the writing is solid but never lofty or in the slightest bit lyrical, but still is a punch in the gut.For example: “…in eleven of the twenty-one countries with published top incomes shares, the portion of all income obtained by the “1 percent” rose between 50 percent and more than 100 percent between 1980 and 2010. In 2012, inequality in the United States even set several records: in that year, top 1 percent income shares (both with and without capital gains) and the share of private wealth owned by the richest 0.01 percent of households for the first time exceeded the high water mark of 1929.”In other words, congratulation America, the chasm of inequality is now greater than during the era of the robber barons.The question the book raises, and one he frames specifically, is — given that inequality in the U.S. is at near historic levels (or beyond) — are there any leveling events that could close the gap, even briefly, and are there in ways we could use policy to reduce inequality. The answers, it seems, are no (short of a far-reaching nuclear conflagration, which he deems unlikely), and also no, given the lack of political will needed to redistribute wealth away from the controlling elite (even though there are scads of ways — dozens of which he lists — to at least nibble around the edges without actually leveling).It’s an important work that is, at times, mind-numbingly boring and at times pants-wettingly frightening, and almost always disheartening. Be careful with the audiobook.The book itself is quite good for what it's trying to do. It's a comprehensive summary of all the instances where inequality has changed throughout history, trying to establish the causes of these changes.Because the author wanted to be data-driven, precise and comprehensive, there is a lot of data and not much narrative.This is very well suited for a written book, where you can look at all the data on the pages at once, going back and forth from one data point to another.Unfortunately, it doesn't work for an audiobook. I had to rewind once every minute or two, totalling hundreds or thousands of times I had to rewind. It's also really hard to keep the focus on: when you're walking and hearing "the share of the national income to the top decile went from 17.6% to 15.2% between 1921 and 1933 in Australia, but 19.7% to 14.3% in France", it's pretty easy to zoom out.That would be ok if the audiobook came with a free kindle. Unfortunately, it doesn't. At the steep price of both versions, I don't think it's acceptable to only sell a barely usable one.

They are really cool. My only complain is that they used cheap paper but they are clear and heavy on content - it will get you there.

The questions are fine but the cards themselves are subpar quality. They leave paper debris everywhere, presumably from the process by which the cardstock was cut

These flash cards cover topics only at a very surface level. You can't use them to learn the nitty gritty (which is what's hard to memorize in the first place). I wouldn't waste any money on these.

Very good black letter law flashcards for MEE and there is space to add a few notes of your own if needed.

Helped me keep issues organized on MEE!

It's good for memory work but if you are more into more mental exercises, this is not for you.

Theses are absolutely terrible. Critical pass are so much better, but they do not offer MEE flash cards just MBE.Everything about these just does not work.

I expected this book to be a simple story with short sentences. But it is a difficult read for beginners. Especially, the text is all compact and it is hard to read. It may be fine for French children, but for beginners with French as a second language, this is too difficult.

Its a cute book downloaded it for my grandson so we had something new to read and he enjoyed it.

Cute story. Bought this to supplement learning French and have found it a fun way to work on vocabulary, sentence structure and the like.

While this is a very helpful book, a) the print is a little small for easy reading, and b) it was not 100% what I was expecting. That is more my fault than the book's, however. I did not research all of the references to it thoroughly enough to understand that it is more clinical than a parent sort of book.

Anyone who has a child, or know of something with Autism NEED THIS BOOK! Very, Very, a Must Read. Bought this book for my Grand-Daughter, who has a two-year old son with Autism. This book is Making its rounds to everyone in our family - it started with me, then my daughter and now my Grand-Daughter.

Out dated but still hold up with the times.

I have been part of the world of autism for 5 1/2 years now. My child is 8. This book was of most interest to me the first two years of his diagnosis, but I still pick it up now and then.When I first received my son' diagnosis, I looked on the Internet and read many horrifying statistics such as, 40% of autistics end up insitutionalized by high school, and 75% of autistics had mental retardation. Nowadays if you do a google search, you would be hard-pressed to find those statistics anywhere. So things have changed DRAMATICALLY since then, and a more recently written book might be more relevant and generally more positive in outlook.This book is NOT a pep-talk. It can be alarming to read some of her statements about autistic children. For example, here is a statement similar to others made in the book: "Because autism constitutes an additional barrier to functioning, autistic people seldom hold jobs at the level that could simply be predicted by their level of intelligence."Depending on my state of mind, this COULD be depressing. But it can also be motivating - I could tell myself, "This is statistical data, it tells me nothing about my own son and his future abilities. It is an interesting fact and something I will keep in mind and try to address as I continue working to help my son fulfill his potential."However, I STILL think this book is worth checking out of the library. The book does a good job of describing autism - particularly the social and communication challenges autistic children face. The other useful thing about her book is that it is a fairly detailed SURVEY of autism, from childhood to adulthood. If your child has autism, you will most likely see aspects of your child in the pages. Sometimes she draws your attention to something you might not have realized was an autistic tendency.For example, her comments on "playlalia" were a wake up call to me that I needed to help my son stretch and elaborate on his play activities. His play looked relatively normal when observed casually - but a closer look revealed characteristics of "playlalia", as she calls it.I've also found the parts describing the loss, anger, and grief of parents, and the impact of autism on siblings, to be useful to our family as well.The treatment resources section was of less interest to me. Siegel holds Lovaas and ABA in high regard and she emphasizes teaching communication skills and behavior management. She briefly mentions "alternative" therapies, such as holding therapy, AIT, diet, and facilitated communication. RDI is too new to be mentioned in this book.In conclusion, useful survey information about autism and its characteristics. The outdated information on outcomes for autistic children, and Siegel's detatched, somewhat pessimistic tone might be too depressing for some parents.

Caveat Emptor! Buyers beware. This book set expectations of hoping to find relevant or recognizable autism experiences and behaviors. I also didn't like the way the author relied on diagnoses and leaned on them like a weakened, tottery old crutch. For example, Dr. Grandin, a famous person with autism and someone who clearly lives with a rather severe form of autism is pigeonholed into the "PDD" (Pervasive Developmental Disorder) box. All of Dr. Grandin's claims about the Autistic Experience appear to be denied. I didn't like that.In reading this, one cannot help thinking that the author had a framework for which her view of autism fit and any and all other information and experience would be denied. My take on it is, if the neurotypical (NT) population wants to know more about autism, then ask somebody with autism! For Pete's sake! Not everybody on the spectrum thinks in pictures, for example. That kind of stereotypical thinking drives me up a tree.Another reviewer on the U.S. boards rightfully says that this book would have better served the NT and autisstic worlds by not pretending to have insight into a world which the author is not a part of nor claim to have insights that are sorely lacking. Saying this book provides insight to the autistic mind is like saying you are a gourmet chef because you watched one cooking show or are a world traveler because you visited one city in one foreign country. Autism is as varied as there are individuals who have it and fewer things annoy me as much as the a) negative stereotypes, such as the tired "Rain Man" cliche and b) NT people claiming they have answers to autism when they are merely spectators and speculators.Describing behavior is one thing. Knowing the underlying causes and understanding the responses people with autism make in given cases is an entirely different matter. I'll say it again - if you want to know about autism, then talk to somebody who is autistic!There are many books that are vastly superior to this one. If you want a good overview of autism/Asperger's, start with Tony Attwood's books. He is truly a leading authority and expert on autism/Asperger's.
